Cocoon Hotel & Lounge

The rooms were spacious and the bed was super comfortable, with a lovely pillow too. The bathroom is tucked into the wardrobe behind a large mirror, and everything was very well maintained. We loved our stay. The hotel is beautiful and modern, with an unusual design. The restaurant and bar are open until 22:00. The menu prices are high, but all the food we had was tasty. You can be served by the pool or inside the restaurant. The pool isn't very big, though its shallow slope lets you sunbathe with your legs in the water. There is no parking, but the street is quiet and it's possible to park right in front of the hotel. A recent article in Correio da Bahia (06/11/2019) about unusual hotels in Salvador described Cocoon this way: "The film Cocoon is a science fiction movie that was a hit in the 1980s. The hotel, named after the film, was created in 2005 as a tribute to it. On the capital's waterfront, the building catches the eye with its orange oval roof structure, which looks like a UFO. The unusual touches aren't limited to the outside. The decor details evoke outer space, and the eccentric theme continues in the hotel's communications: guests are called astronauts, and its 27 rooms are called spaceships and named after satellites, such as Atlas and Titania. Although there is no elevator, the ground floor has a lobby, bar, restaurant, and pool. Another eye-catching feature is the use of can tabs in curtains, sofa covers, and other details. The works of art are part of the Social Project of the Can-Tab Seamstresses of the Ogunjá Community."

The beach is close, though I wouldn’t choose it for swimming. It’s quiet and mostly used by surfers. The hotel is near the airport but a long way from downtown. When I came back this week, the pool was being renovated. I’ve read other reviews, and everyone has their own take. From my experience traveling around Brazil, this is somewhere I’d bring my wife: the place is lovely and romantic, and the apartment is spacious, clean, and has a modern decor, new TV, and new air conditioning. I’d recommend it for couples. Since I was there for work, I didn’t feel comfortable hanging out in the poolside lounge with all the couples around. It’s open to the public too, and I knew I’d get homesick. The shower is electric, but the water pressure is good and it gets hot. The restaurant owner and the waiter working that day gave excellent service. The staff were very polite, though a little more serious than I’d expect in Bahia. I do think the place could use more of Bahia’s warmth. People live in paradise but can look pretty stern. Even on a work trip, out in the heat, I kept my spirits up and brought plenty of axé.

The staff give good service, and the hotel is decent value overall. Breakfast is good, though it’s exactly the same every day. The restaurant on site charges quite a lot for what it serves. The Wi-Fi barely stays connected for five minutes on a computer, so it’s no use for working. The room doors are glass, box-style doors, and they rattle loudly when the wind picks up at night, which bothered me while trying to sleep. The pool also closes at 7:00 p.m.

I felt right at home in the flat I stayed in and really loved the place. It’s in a good spot near the beach and little bars, and the value for money was very good.
