There aren’t many choices in Santarém, and this hostel is the cheapest. It’s fine for one night, but I wouldn’t come back. The owner really is lovely and helpful, as other reviews say, but the place felt odd. I was in a dorm, and I think the owner’s children slept in the bunk above me. The mattress was so thin I could feel the bed slats through it, so I slept badly.

The only upside is the location near the waterfront and a few tourist spots, but it still isn’t worth it. The place was filthy and moldy. There are no bathroom photos, and I can see why: the toilet and shower are together, with no sink, so we brushed our teeth at the kitchen sink. The mattress was so bad I could feel the bed frame pressing into my back. I booked a private room with a double bed, but they put me in a bunk bed room and didn’t adjust the price. Booking says towels and breakfast are included, but that wasn’t what we found when we got there.
