Hostel da Fonte

Hostel da Fonte was a lovely surprise in São Luís. The rooftop lookout has a beautiful view of the city and was a perfect place to relax after exploring downtown. The hostel is very well kept, clean, organized, and has a peaceful feel. It’s close to the Centro Histórico, so you can get almost everywhere on foot. Dona Claudete and Sr. Bernardo make the place feel special. They’re genuinely warm hosts, and their presence is at the heart of the hostel. Breakfast was delicious, homemade, generous, and clearly prepared with care. I felt really comfortable here and would recommend it without hesitation.

I was lucky to find a room here at the last minute. The location is perfect, the hostel is so well organized, and the rooftop view is beautiful. Breakfast was delicious too. I’d just finished the crossing and was exhausted, and I had impinge without knowing that was what it was at the time. Bernardo, one of the owners, even helped me with my bicheira. Can you believe it? I went out to see the arraia, and when I got back he was there with the ointment for me. Honestly, I was better looked after here than at home. I can’t wait to return.

Claudete and Bernardo are warm, outgoing hosts who are always ready to sort things out or have a chat, and the whole staff is helpful. The breakfast is varied and very good. Rooms are spacious and come with air conditioning, a wardrobe, and individual sockets and lights. Bathrooms have hot showers. The building is old, like many in São Luís, so the rooms don’t have windows. There’s a wonderful terrace where you can work and enjoy a wide view of the city, including the bay, the newer part, and some of the central area. The location is excellent, five minutes on foot from the Centro Histórico and another five minutes from the São João attractions at Igreja de Santo Antonio. It’s also very close to the traditional Feririnha de domingo. I highly recommend Hostel da Fonte.

Dona Claudete and Sr. Bernardo made us feel at home right away. They were kind, attentive, and always ready to help. The Hostel da Fonte also has a lovely city view from its lookout, and the place itself is clean, tidy, and cozy. It’s right beside the Historic Center, so getting to the main sights on foot is easy. Breakfast was wonderful too. Staying there was one of my best choices in São Luís, and I’d happily return.
