Castelhana Praia Hotel - Itauna Saquarema

The location is good, and the drinks are modern and awesome, but that doesn't undo the bad feeling we left with. They seem very elitist and treat people differently based on race and wealth. It isn't subtle. Talk to the hostess or owner, who's usually around on Thursday afternoons and most evenings, and you can hear it for yourself if you keep the conversation going. They seem proud of it, too. We have a Range Rover, and the first time we arrived, the gates opened like magic and everything went smoothly. The next day I invited local friends who have a Fiat Uno, a popular local car model. They said they were ignored at the gate for over half an hour. My friend had to call me, looking really ashamed, and the whole situation ruined our evening. The staff are nice, the sunsets are great and the rooms are clean. Still, if you don't like the feeling of south colonial America, avoid the place at all costs.

I'm only talking about the restaurant here, which you can visit even if you're not staying at the hotel. The place is beautiful, with a huge outdoor area and a view of the beach while you eat. That alone makes the experience worthwhile. The food is really, really good, there are lots of drinks, and the staff are kind. Prices are very fair too. If you're nearby, give it a try!

Gustavo, the owner, keeps everything in mint condition, and the beach access is lovely. The rooms and food are good, and there's a pool, right across from Itaúna beach. For surfers, this is where the Brazil leg of the WSL Championship Tour happens every late June. Best pousada in Saquarema by far!
