The room had a lingering bad smell, and there was no soundproofing. I could hear everything from the hallway and neighboring rooms, which made for restless nights. The room and cabinet doors also showed serious water damage and were deteriorating, giving the place a neglected feel. For the price and the expectation of a decent stay, it was a major letdown. I wouldn’t recommend it unless these problems are fixed.

I stayed in room 1056 on the top floor, facing the bar, and woke one morning to find smoke throughout the room from grilling at the bar. Reception moved me to another room, but offered no compensation for the ruined night. Rooms facing the bar are extremely noisy at night, and the noise from the bar and surrounding area makes sleep difficult. The interiors are worn and rusty, including rust in the shower and outdated furniture. I’ve also seen reports of poor staff training, low service, unresolved issues, dirty sheets and towels not being replaced, and smoke smells in rooms from guests smoking on balconies or nearby. These recurring issues make it hard for Ibis Praia de Canto to meet expectations for its category. It hardly deserves three stars or the Ibis name. If you drink every day and come back drunk, maybe it suits you, but a hotel should let people sleep and provide good service. Here, you get neither. I expect compensation from Ibis soon for the inconvenience.

The staff were nice, and the hotel was generally clean. We found out we had to pay for breakfast only on checkout day, and the language barrier made things harder. Our room was tiny compared with places we’ve stayed before, and not having a microwave was a challenge. It might work well for a night or two, but seven days was difficult. The air conditioning was either set to 15 Celsius or off, and with no extra blanket or comforter I was cold by the third day. We also didn’t get hand or face towels.

The rooms badly need refurbishing. The air conditioner had been patched with sellotape, and the paintwork, bathroom tiles, and shower enclosure were all old.
