Caye Caulker Plaza Hotel

The 10-bed dorm was good value for the price, with two bathrooms in the room and a mini fridge. The location is great, right across from a large grocery store and the bakery. There’s air conditioning, and the staff were friendly.

I’ve been coming to Caye Caulker for 15 years and have stayed at the Plaza many times, but the place has gone way downhill. I have to assume there’s a new owner. The old luxurious beds and nice, fresh linens are gone, and the towels are worn and frayed. The toilet doesn’t work, which seems to come down to the property not being maintained. There’s also a bar right next door playing loud music from noon until 1:30 AM. I’m not exaggerating, our windows shook until 1:30 last night, and the music started again at noon today. I’m checking out and moving somewhere else today. I won’t stay a second night or come back.

The staff were kind and provided drinking water. The six-bed dorm has air conditioning at night. It was 20 US dollars.

For a week on the island, this worked out well for us given the price, central location, cleanliness, and friendly staff, as long as you keep your expectations in check. It isn’t a quiet, serene resort-style place, but with that understood, I think it’s hard to go wrong. The lobby had fresh coffee in the morning and drinking water, and the rooms were large with comfortable beds. The A/C worked well when we needed it, and housekeeping did a good job. The staff gave us recommendations for places to eat, though it seemed like they might favor certain spots based on who they wanted to support rather than quality. Still, their suggestions for things to see and do were useful. The water eventually warmed up, but you have to let it run a bit. Cooler water at first didn't bother me. I didn't drink the tap water, and I don't think anyone does here. Keeping all that in mind, I’d be happy to stay again.
