Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection

The bathroom in our studio had no real privacy. There was no shower door, and you could see into the bathroom from across the room. The beds could be more comfortable, and there’s no beach access for swimming, despite the great water views. That said, we had a great stay. The resort is modern and has all the amenities you could want in Belize. Its location is handy, a quick golf cart ride from downtown San Pedro and close to grocery shops, cafes, and drive-through coffee. The room AC worked well, the golf cart parking lot was convenient, and we loved the swim-up bar, poolside lunch menu, and heated pool on shady mornings. The breakfast buffet, which was complimentary for us, was a daily highlight, especially sitting outside with views of the pool and palm trees. Ronaldo and Martin at the main pool were awesome and really helpful. We’d highly recommend it to Bonvoy members and will be back.

Captain Vito and Sam made our day on the water unforgettable. The boat had a fun, relaxed feel, and everything was thoughtfully set up so we could enjoy ourselves. The freshly cooked fish was outstanding, one of the best meals we had, and it was great to catch it and eat it right there. Service was attentive, thoughtful, and genuinely kind. They clearly love what they do. If you’re considering a day on the water, book with Captain Vito and Sam. You won’t regret it. The rooms were great, though customer service at the hotel needs work. I called the front desk three times without anyone answering. We’re all lifetime Platinum Elite members, and we weren’t treated that way. For an Autograph Collection hotel, I expected more. As for the excursions, they were phenomenal.

The staff made this place for us. We stayed a week, and every person we met made eye contact and said hello. More often than not, they also asked how things were going or if we needed anything. Great team, music, and atmosphere, without the music being too loud. The grounds and hotel are laid out nicely and very well maintained. Our corner ocean-view room was spotless and had a spectacular balcony. The burger and appetizers at the pool bar were very good. We didn’t eat at Sea Salt, so can’t comment on the restaurant. Sunny resorts can be good at hospitality but fall short on follow-through, and Alaia exceeded our expectations. I’d definitely stay here again if I return to Belize.

The room design is the reason for my three stars, and that’s on the (Marriott?) designers and decision makers, not the day-to-day staff, who were great. We had a first-floor room with no bathroom door, just a barn door that covered either the toilet area or half the shower. You could see into the shower from outside the room. If you want privacy, I guess you have to pay to upgrade. The shower door didn’t close, and the water was tepid rather than hot, so the shower area never warmed up. There are good things too. The property is beautiful, with a nice pool, hot tub, rooftop area, and a good location. Staff were friendly, and they really understood and took my Celiac food allergies seriously. Excellent work training the team on that.
