Colonial Inn

The parking lot had icy ruts bad enough that my car got stuck and other people had to help push it. Still, I’d recommend the place 10/10. The room was clean and comfortable, and our window looked out toward the pool, which was an okay view. I didn’t try the pool, so can’t comment on it. Breakfast was nice, with waffles, sausages, and some snacks. Other stores are close by, which was convenient.

I was driving from Alberta to Ontario and needed somewhere in Manitoba to stop late at night. The hotel is in Brandon, around 5-10km from the Trans-Canada Highway. The room looked clean and had good space for one person, and the staff were friendly. They let me park under the hotel entrance canopy because my luggage was in the car and it was snowing all night. The food could have been better. But the worst part was waking up the next morning with multiple bed bug bites. I then had to drive for the next 3 days with that sensation around my hand and body. Frustrating!

I’m furious that they charged my card for all three days after what happened. I normally spend 125-150 nights a year in hotels, and I’ve never dealt with staff this rude or unprofessional. If the Colonial were my only option while passing through Brandon, I’d sleep in my truck. I checked in Monday Oct 13th 2025 and had arranged to leave at 4pm Oct 15th because I was working night shifts. The woman at check-in told me there’d be an additional late checkout charge, which is normal. After a 14-hour night shift on Wednesday morning, I went to the desk to make sure everyone knew I was leaving at 4pm. The older man there already knew. A few hours later, a maid repeatedly banged on my door. I ignored it, expecting her to check with the desk, but she came back and pounded for minutes while I was nearly asleep again. When I answered, she said checkout had passed and I should have left. I explained the 4pm arrangement, and she made several rude comments as she walked away. I couldn’t fall asleep again and spent hours tossing and turning. Around 3:00 in the afternoon I began packing, then another maid knocked at 3:45 to ask when I was leaving. By then I’d slept maybe two hours and had another 14-hour night shift ahead.

The room was dirty, with mouse traps and black mold in the bathroom. I found bed bugs and showed them to staff, who didn’t seem fazed. The manager couldn’t even be bothered to come deal with it. I was not impressed at all. You get what you pay for, that’s for sure.
