Four Points by Sheraton Hotel & Suites Calgary West

The staff were kind and friendly, and the restaurant food was really good. The hotel was clean, too. But I was taken aback by the condition. I knew from the website it was an older place and didn’t expect too much, but the rooms are unbelievably dated and seem hard to maintain. It doesn’t feel like a Marriott at all, and anyone used to higher-end Marriott hotels will be disappointed. The slide also seems close to a safety hazard and needs replacing ASAP. The bathroom tap has a very strong flow, and when the bathroom switch is on, it makes a sound like a jet engine. It’s extremely loud, with no way to turn it off. I understand now why the price was so low. I feel bad for the staff.

Coffee in the lobby is always a nice touch, and the staff were smiling and attentive. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well maintained, a step above the average nice hotel. I’d stay here again in a heartbeat.

The clean hotel, polite front desk, and convenient west side location were good. My two stars are only for the sleep I got. We were put in a room with a connecting door to the next room, where a man and his small dog were staying. The dog barked twice overnight and quieted quickly when told, but I could also hear the guest coughing and making other sounds through the door. There’s no noise filtering or privacy between the rooms. I’ve been awake since the first barking at 3 am, and now it’s 5:30. The door may as well have been open. I could hear our neighbour going to the bathroom and burping. I’d ask for a room without a connecting door.

Two nights here, most of them spent playing “What’s that Sound?” A random WoooWoooWoooWooo noise went on through the evenings, and a different sound like an industrial fridge started up when I was trying to sleep. The place is very dated and dirty, and the chairs looked like they came from a frat house. I checked for bedbugs after seeing the furniture. Maybe the room had been fumigated recently. I had an executive suite, though I can’t imagine an executive staying in it. I asked three times for bathrobes and nobody seemed to understand what I meant. The decaf in the lobby was cold, while the high-test coffee was hot and pretty good. The coffee table wobbled so badly I had to wedge jujubes under its legs, and I didn’t have tools with me. I never used the pool. Hotel pools are all gross. I pity the front desk people. That waterfall thing must drive them around the bend.
