The stay seemed like a good deal at first, but it ended on a bad note. My family and I needed a Calgary place for a couple of days during our Alberta trip, and after lots of good Airbnb experiences we booked an apartment at 630 8th Ave SE. My wife, Inna, is our cozy-spot finder. The two bedrooms and two bathrooms suited four of us, including a 10-year-old and an elderly lady. The owner, who uses the name Zee on the platform, was reasonably friendly, though a bit terse. We arrived on the evening of 7 September and had to figure out how to enter the condo and get to the parking. It was past midnight, so I looked over the apartment properly the next day. It was clean and functional. I photographed a large but hard-to-notice stain under a living room armchair that smelled like machine oil, along with a few deep scratches on the hardwood floor. They didn’t seem like a big deal then, but came up again two days later, when we were leaving. We asked if we could check out a little later, but Zee said no because the cleaners were due right after us. We hurried to pack. About an hour before checkout, Zee messaged to say the downstairs neighbors were complaining about a leak and asked for a photo under the kitchen sink. We sent one, and I also sent the earlier pictures of the stain and scratches, just in case. The cleaners arrived about five minutes before we were meant to leave. They were impressively rude. They didn’t respond to our polite hellos and stood in the doorway glaring as we moved around. When we asked about the keys, one of them, a young woman, curtly said, “You can leave.” Thanks for the permission. We had left Zee a good review, and he’d left us a positive one too. Right afterward, he sent another invoice for $200, claiming we’d left “the mess.” This was just minutes after his review said the place was clean. His evidence was a photo of the space under the sink, which we’d left as we found it on day one, and the oil stain under the chair. We disputed the charge, which Airbnb allows. I don’t know what Zee was trying to accomplish, but the incident spoiled what had otherwise been a decent impression of the condo. Airbnb wouldn’t let us add a follow-up review, so I’m posting here on Google. Be cautious dealing with Zee. I’ve attached apartment photos and screenshots of our messages.
