The little details made this stay feel especially thoughtful. I liked the house rule about taking shoes off indoors, which felt familiar to me as someone who is half-Japanese. The proprietor also let us keep our bikes in his garage and pointed us toward a good place for dinner. Everything was spotless, and the bathroom had soft, luxurious towels and actual glass glasses instead of plastic. The B&B itself feels like a carefully arranged museum, full of beautiful antiques and lovely design. A unique, welcoming place in Cornwall, Ontario.

We stayed in the Tudor Room, which was grand and comfortable, and the shower had excellent water pressure. Breakfast was delicious, especially the strong coffee, which I’m particular about coming from Brazil. The other guests were fun to chat with, too. Chesley’s is a treat all by itself. Hamish is a sweetheart, and we spent time just relaxing in the delightful garden. Robert welcomed us at 10:30am, though the room wasn’t ready for early check-in, and kindly kept our luggage while we explored Cornwall. I only wish we’d had longer to talk with him; he seems to have plenty of stories. Robert made our first B&B stay with my husband a lovely one. The Inn feels like Jane Austen with a touch of Gilmore Girls. Cornwall is often just a stop on the way to Montreal, which is why Chesley’s was built over 200 years ago. If you do stay in town, this Inn is well worth it.

We came to Cornwall for the Apples and Art Studio Tour in late September and would happily visit again. The Chesley is a short walk from the shops and restaurants, and a long riverside walk is a lovely idea. Our room was very comfortable, the place was spotless, and there’s free parking out back. The setting has lots of interesting art and antiques, and all three breakfasts were delicious and a delight.

The gardens were lovely for settling down with a book or a drink in the evening, and Hamish, Robert’s Scottish Terrier sidekick, was a delightful presence. Robert was a kind, generous host and did far more than expected to help us celebrate our 40th anniversary. The historic old inn has plenty of charm. Our room was spotless and the bed comfortable, and Robert served delicious breakfasts that changed each day, all in an elegant style that suited the house. Finding this intriguing B&B is what we’ll remember about the year we vacationed in Cornwall.

A stay at Chesley's Inn beats a night in a bland hotel you’ll forget. Places like this make a neighbourhood nicer to live in and worth visiting. Robert has turned a neglected landmark into a proud community showpiece and an important part of Cornwall’s appeal to tourists. He deserves a medal for it.
