Travelodge Suites by Wyndham Halifax Dartmouth

I’ve never had to leave a bad review for a Wyndham owned hotel before, but this stay was a complete disaster. The desk employee wasn’t wearing her mask properly, ignored me for several minutes, then was rude when she finally checked me in. She said the room type I booked wasn’t available and gave us a king instead of two queen beds. That might work for a couple, but not when you’re travelling with a friend. The room had old contacts on the nightstand and hair in the bed and sink. I called down to ask for another room. The clerk didn’t apologize and rudely told me to come get a key for a different room, so I did. The second room was even worse, with food on the floor and nightstand and more hair in the washroom. The desk employee said the hotel was fully booked, so at 10 p.m. we were stuck in one of those rooms. She said housekeeping wasn’t her department and offered only a $10 discount, still without apologizing. If this is how they treat platinum members, I don’t want to know how casual customers are treated. Maybe this was just an unlucky experience, but the employee’s attitude made it much worse.

The stairs are much faster than waiting for the very old elevator. It’s a solid, well-priced hotel just off the highway, with pretty nice, clean rooms and a small breakfast each morning. The AC in our room was capped at 18, which is a good temperature, but the room never cooled down to that.

The free breakfast was very good, the staff were extremely friendly, and service was quick, professional, and pleasant. Our room was clean and very well priced, so I’ll definitely return, though I’ll try a different bed next time. The king bed was uncomfortably hard. The room coffee was disappointing: just two packets, no tea or decaf, and the coffee tasted nearly stale and poorly flavoured, like a cheap option. The decor felt dated, and the hallway had a faint smell of cigarette or happy cigarette smoke. We had a parking lot view, though the city view from the other side of the hotel looked very nice.

The room was quiet, which I liked, and comfortable, though small. I also found the privacy quite good. Breakfast was included in the hotel fees but was minimal, short on condiments like butter, ketchup, mustard, relish, and syrup, and offered only one tea brand. Getting to the hotel can be a challenge without a vehicle since it sits at the top of a hill. There are 40 steep steps on rocky ground just outside the hotel, and they can be dangerous in wet weather. The hotel has signs on each landing saying “Use at your own risk.” Otherwise, you have to walk a longer route up the hill to the parking lot. Seniors, people with disabilities, or anyone pregnant and without a vehicle should know that reaching the hotel can be quite a workout.
