Key West Inn

The people are what made the stay easier. The owner and staff were great, and the town is lovely. The room was livable, though the air conditioning worked only some of the time, the old bed was uncomfortable, and the hallway smelled like BO for about half the month we were there. Still, it beat living in a car for a month, and I'd stay again.

My son barely slept on his first night in the room he had rented for a month because bedbugs bit him badly. When he switched on the bathroom light, he found it full of cockroaches. I sent the manager a photo, but they accused him of putting them there and said they weren't cockroaches. Management was very rude, and after that awful night he couldn't wait to leave. They did refund part of the monthly rate, though it should have been a full refund.

We were paying $1300 a month for Room 218, where the beds were so old that I now have lower back pain. There was no heat, black mold around the windows, and the electrical outlets didn't work properly. The TV remote only controlled the satellite dish's power, so we had to turn the TV on manually. When its battery stopped working, we had to buy one ourselves because the manager wouldn't provide batteries for housekeeping. We were supposed to get weekly housekeeping, but it turned out someone was being charged for it even though it was meant to be included in the rent. We also asked several times to move to another room, but the manager wouldn't listen, even though he moved other people. On the non-smoking floor, we smelled drugs and saw smoking. When we asked the owner and manager about it, they said they'd check the cameras and get back to us, but never did. A woman across the hall who worked at the hotel lost her job but kept her keys instead of returning them to the front desk. Whenever my girlfriend and I left the building, she would sneak into our room, smoke, and pick through our things. We told the manager someone had been in our room, but he again refused to check the cameras. I felt he was covering for the woman next door. This was the worst experience of my life, and I'll never rent month to month at this hotel again. I'd give it half a star.

I lasted less than two hours after checking in. The lights wouldn't turn on unless I used the lamp, and there was no hot water. I asked the manager for a full or even partial refund, but he refused. Absolutely filthy and disgusting. If a roach motel is what you're after, this is the place.
