Dunvegan Inn and Suites

This place was so gross that we’d rather add two hours to our morning commute and stay in peace River. It’s easily one of the dirtiest hotels in the country. I can’t believe the standards are this low.

The restaurant was a bright spot: delicious food and excellent service. The front desk was a very different experience. The older Caucasian man on the night shift was rude and stared at me when I politely asked for a laundry bag.

We were in town for a family funeral, and after finally getting some much needed rest, we were jolted awake before the funeral and a long drive home. The noises from above started at 725 in the morning, like beasts of hell trying to claw through the ceiling. I was told nobody was on the roof because nobody had taken the key, but the sounds and the fall protection railing around the roofline suggested otherwise. If there were gremlins up there, that would explain it. No real solution was offered then, just that they’d speak to the owner. The room itself was clean enough and the bed was decent, but there’s a lot that needs repair. The chair seemed to eject you, the TV was garbled because its speakers weren’t working properly, and the old blackout curtains left a star pattern on the ceiling. It’s a place for an early start if you enjoy decoding TV audio and spotting constellations indoors. I couldn’t get anyone at the front desk by calling from inside, so I had to call from outside the hotel to reach someone. At checkout, the front desk woman was wonderful, apologized quickly, and tried to sort it out. She got the manager, who authorized a refund, though there were mostly excuses beyond that. The restaurant staff were friendly, and service at both the café and the fireside was wonderful. That was the only part of the stay I’d recommend. The hotel needs serious updates. If you have to be in Fairview, stay with family or friends, or drive from Grand Prairie and stay in GP.

The second night was much better: we moved into a new suite, the AC worked, and it was so nice. It had a full kitchen, 1½ bathrooms, and two bedrooms, one with a king bed and the other with two queens. Our first night, the AC quit working, and even a fan didn’t make the room comfortable.
