The Fort Nelson Hotel

This place feels past its prime. I'm told the pool hasn't been filled with water for five years. The rooms are warm and stuffy, with no air conditioning. There is an air-conditioned room at the back, but it's pretty bare and remote.

The unusual decor made me want to like this place, and the staff are nice and the rooms inexpensive. But it's run down and dark. It went out of business and the bank sold it to new owners. They're repairing it now, and a new roof is going on as I write this. There is a pool, but the area isn't lit and can't be accessed. Staff warned me the pool was cold, though I can't say for sure. If you can afford to, you might want to stay somewhere else.

The price was reasonable, and having a kitchenette was useful. The room felt dated, though, so look elsewhere if you want something that looks fresh. Check-in was easy, with a friendly, helpful clerk. At checkout, the woman seemed bothered by having to do her job and was rude. Still, the stay was comfortable and clean, with no other problems. I would stay again.

The room was clean, but it was in rough shape. A few lights didn’t work, and the heater was loud enough to make sleeping difficult. I’d choose pretty much anywhere else next time. The advertised rate was far below what I was charged: it wasn’t 65 or 75 a night, but 100. Thanks for reading, and blessings and safe travels.
