I’d stay here again despite the overcharge and booking problems, but the train station loudspeaker can be heard every hour all night, so ask for a room at the back. The rooms themselves are large and comfortable, with a sink, mini fridge, and microwave. On two stays, one room was cold and its TV had no LIVE TV because of an update error. Coffee was lousy as usual, so bring your own and use their maker, which takes small basket-shaped filters. The free breakfast is gone, and it wasn’t good anyway. The booking experience was a mess. The Inn’s site said there were no rooms, but booking.com had rooms for less and with one fewer service fee. The Inn can book over the counter, despite an employee telling me they couldn’t. I wound up with two rooms to switch between mid-trip, which I didn’t realize until I arrived, and three service fees for one visit. I called the reservation site linked by the Inn and got dropped five times. One representative gave me information another said was false. Suddenly the price had jumped more than 200%, and nobody could find my second reservation. They wouldn’t change the service fees. The man at the Inn counter started with “Hello?” and couldn’t help with the fees, the rooms, or the price. He suddenly had a 10% discount that he hadn’t had a minute earlier, but the price was already a joke. Google won’t allow a second review, which is really stupid.

The rooms were disgusting, the whole building smelled of smoke, and there was blood on the sheets. It’s the dirtiest hotel I’ve ever seen. We couldn’t stay because the room was so horrible, so I told the staff in the lobby and they gave me a refund at least. Avoid it at all costs.

The shower was hard to manage, with both the water pressure and temperature difficult to control. The heating system was also tricky to adjust. The room and hallways smelled like cigarette smoke, and the place could use a remodel.

The location right downtown, reasonable price, free parking, and really good customer service made up for the lack of luxury. Brant at the front desk was especially friendly and helpful, and our room was clean. Our expectations were low, but we were pleasantly surprised. I’ve stayed in worse hotels. It’s not fancy, but I’d come back.

We woke up on our second morning covered in bed bug bites. The bed had seemed clean, but staff offered no apology or accountability, even though they were otherwise friendly and helpful. Bed bugs, stay away. We’d booked a room with a tub for a bubble bath, but the bathroom smelled musty and dank, so we avoided it unless we absolutely had to go in. It wasn’t the worst hotel I’ve stayed at, though I’d guess it’s the worst in Guelph.
