Travelodge by Wyndham Sarnia

The room took several hours to warm up, even with the heat turned all the way up. There’s no free breakfast, despite what the website says. The lobby smelled of pot, and the shared areas were dirty, run-down, and neglected. The vending machine was empty.

Every staff member I dealt with during my three nights was friendly and accommodating. They even let me know how my dogs were doing while I was at work, and they weren’t bothered by them. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and it stayed really quiet and peaceful. I had a great experience.

Breakfast was a small, fixed plate: one egg that had to be over easy, two strips of bacon, a slice of toast, and burnt coffee. Across the road, the booths at Timmies offered more support than the mattresses, which left all of us with sore backs and/or arms. The room had a musty smell when we arrived, though at first it didn’t seem too bad. Then we noticed the floor stains and dirty handprints on the wall. The toilet looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in a week. The sheets were all flat sheets folded onto the bed, and the duvet had no cover, just two flat sheets. There was no plug in the bathtub, so taking a bath wasn’t an option. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel.

We were charged too much, and although we’d booked a king, we were put in a queen room with no refund or compensation. We’re a same sex couple, and the repeated effort to steer us toward a room with two double beds felt like thinly veiled homophobia. They said the hotel was “booked solid,” yet during our three nights over Easter there were only three or four cars in the lot at any given time. The so-called “made to order breakfast” was a basic plate with set items. We could only choose how the single egg was cooked and what kind of bread we wanted. The coffee was awful. Go to the Tims across the street and spare yourself the swill served here. Our floor was sticky, there was debris on it and dirty handprints on the walls, and the bathroom finishes were dated. The bathroom ceiling exhaust fan was dirty too, as you can see in the photos. The main hallway had a strange smell. Our room was only cleaner than this if you got lucky. The hotel allows pets, but charges extra on top of the already overpriced room rate. We also had no towels, face cloths, or bath mat, and no bedspread. There was one roll of toilet paper but no holder rod, and no facial tissues. Only one satellite TV channel worked. At least the WiFi was free. The front desk staff weren’t very friendly and did the bare minimum when we raised issues, passing us off to a manager who never showed up during our stay to “address our concerns.” Don’t book through Expedia. The hotel won’t help, and calling Travelodge by Wyndham’s toll-free number gets nowhere because they send you back to Expedia. The online pictures and the actual room were completely different. It was a disappointing stay. Spend more and book somewhere better.
