The rooms are quiet and comfortable, and breakfast was good. We came as a team for the weekend and the friendly staff let the girls use the upstairs hallway and lobby to run around, which made the trip for them. It’s a two-story hotel with a refreshed lobby and exercise room, and the first-floor rooms are being updated. It’s clean and works well for a short stay, though it isn’t especially spacious or luxurious.

We chose this hotel after a great stay at the Comfort Inn in Ingersoll the day before, when we were in town for a funeral. This stay was a huge disappointment. The room lighting was very dim, the tub and toilet were dated, and we couldn’t open the blinds because cars parked right outside left us without privacy. Breakfast was especially bad. A staff member guarded the hot food and served it, and we had to prove our room number. The eggs had been cooked ahead, chilled, then reheated, and were rubbery and grainy. The waffles had no taste, and the coffee was disgusting. We ate at 9 a.m., with checkout at 11, and after being away for only 15 minutes, we returned to find housekeeping’s things parked outside our door. It felt like we were being pushed out. It seemed like costs were being cut and guests were being controlled. At checkout, the supervisor asked how the stay was. I said it was okay, but she didn’t ask what was wrong and wouldn’t look at me afterward. The hotel has since said it will look into these issues, so I guess we’ll see.

The complimentary breakfast was actually good, and the staff were friendly and quick when I called to book. But I had requested a room away from the first floor, without a door opening outside, and that request wasn’t met. The room smelled of cigarettes. Front desk staff came to check and said they couldn’t smell anything, but it kept me awake all night. I saw other reviews mentioning the same smell. They take a $200 damage deposit, though I felt I should get a deposit from them to clean all my belongings. The toilet also didn’t flush well, and the shower had very little water pressure.

We booked Comfort Inn Guelph a year ahead as part of our wedding plans, hoping to make things easier for us and our guests. Instead, the hotel made an already stressful time worse. Even though we arrived first, we waited over an hour to check in while people who came later were helped ahead of us. When we asked for help, staff said they were busy because of a wedding. It was our wedding, and they treated us like an inconvenience. Months earlier, they had promised us a complimentary night as part of the booking. Then, one night before the wedding, they took it away without a proper explanation or apology. The poor communication, broken promise, and disregard for our time felt completely unprofessional and lacking in empathy. We trusted them with one of the most important weekends of our lives, and they let us down. If you’re planning a wedding or another special event in Guelph, I’d avoid Comfort Inn Guelph. They didn’t seem to care about their customers.

The hot water was freezing cold when I arrived last night, and I had to move rooms. At breakfast this morning, they told me I could have only one of each item. I just wanted two waffles. They said there’s a new policy coming where an extra $30 to $40 will be charged if you want more than one item. If I’m paying extra, I might as well go to the Denny's down the street. People should be told about this in the booking details on all the sites. Nobody’s going to want to pay that much extra just to be told they can’t have breakfast. There wasn’t much on the bar, and the food seemed processed, just patties they heat up, not anything cooked in the kitchen. I work 12-hour days, sometimes nearly 18, and even getting juice was a hassle. They had to serve it, and about 90% of it was water. I travel all over the world, and being restricted to one item is crazy. I’m very disappointed with the service, especially since I’m staying one more night. If Choice reads this, please contact me and tell me who I can speak to by email.
