The lobby looked great, and the staff were lovely, but basic things in the room kept breaking or weren’t working right. The shower knob fell off, the reading light by the bed was broken, the drawer pull under the bed had come loose on one side, and the fridge handle came off in my hand. There was a bad draft at the window, and the lantern handle had to be snapped together. We were in a bunk room, which is a fun idea, but it needs a fan. The top bunks were too hot while the bottom ones were uncomfortably cold. The coffee was okay, but the tea water was lukewarm. Every staff member I spoke with seemed to be having trouble with the computer system, and we had to check in twice because they first gave our group one bed instead of the two bunk beds we’d reserved. I reported the problems at checkout and hope someone checks the room for maintenance. Leaving the parking lot was also a hassle each time, because the door wouldn’t work and someone had to get out to press its button. The place looks like it was designed by a great designer on a TEMU spree, with the cheapest quality build.

The water fountains on every floor were a nice surprise, and they even gave us a complimentary drinks coupon. There’s also a great gym. The US consulate is just a five-minute walk away, which makes this a handy place to stay for a visa interview. It was my favourite hotel for a while, and I’d highly recommend it. I’ll definitely be back.

The common areas made this a great place to spend our whole night, with games like life-size Connect 4, Jenga, and chess, plus a cool room hidden behind a bookshelf. The hotel has a modern, central European feel, and the smaller rooms can fit families. Thanks to the Moxy staff for making our staycation so special. Healther was amazing, and she and the other front desk staff were so kind and accommodating. The wait staff were great too. At breakfast, I dropped my knife and the waiter had already brought me another one before I looked up. We didn’t even need to leave the hotel, and our engagement staycation is one we won’t forget. I’d recommend it for time with family and friends. Thank you MOXY!

The lobby is clearly where the hotel wants you to spend your time and money. It’s lively, with a busy bar, food, games, and TVs, and the staff all around are great. The floor pantry with extra towels and free toiletries is a useful touch, even if most of that stuff would normally be in the room. A lot of the shared spaces feel designed for influencers, though, and all that kitschy styling makes my skin crawl. The rooms aren’t especially small, but they’re bare and uncomfortable, more like a dorm than somewhere to hang out. The bed and bedding weren’t comfy, and the only chair was a stiff folding one. Charging options were poor, the Chromecast didn’t work, and the lighting made little sense. The bathroom barn door doesn’t seal, the toilet wasn’t firmly attached, the blinds bunched up when lowered, and there were stains and scuffs on the walls, tiles, and cheap anodized sink. Even the faux rotary phone has buttons instead of dial holes. It feels like nobody considered what’s useful. I’ve stayed at an Alt Hotel, where the rooms are smaller but functional, comfortable, and have tech that works. This Moxy feels like Marriott trying hard to be cool and landing on cringe. For a first stay with this budget Marriott brand, I can see the concept, but it misses in a lot of ways.

The rooms were probably the smallest I’ve ever seen, and I stay in hotels every week. Still, they were extremely clean, modern, and nice, with especially lovely bathrooms. The bar area is a very cool, trendy spot too. You check in at the bar and get a poker chip for a complimentary drink, which is a nice touch. I really enjoyed my two nights at the Moxy Halifax Downtown Hotel and would recommend giving it a try.
