Ptarmigan Inn

After a late arrival with my family on a business trip to Hay River, the staff quickly set us up in a comfortable room near the back door, which made things easier. They were kind, humble, and helpful from the start. The room was clean and well maintained, with good air conditioning and strong free Wi-Fi. I enjoyed using the clean, convenient gym the next morning, and the breakfast staff took great care of me. I also relaxed for a while in the pub. A great stay.

I came without a personal vehicle, so the convenient location close to everything was a real help. Check-in was easy, and the staff stayed friendly and helpful throughout. My room was clean, comfortable, and well maintained, with strong Wi-Fi and the basic amenities. Early in the morning I couldn't get a cab to the airport, but the manager kindly drove me so I wouldn't miss my flight. A very pleasant stay. I'd gladly return and recommend it to anyone visiting Hay River.

Some staff were nice, but that's about the only good thing I can say. I stayed for a week and never got a good night's rest. The walls are paper thin, so noise late at night and at 5 in the morning kept waking me. Room temperatures were a mess: sometimes the heat couldn't be turned off, other times it didn't work at all and there were little electric heaters in the rooms. The fridge froze my food even on its lowest setting. Restaurant food quality varied, and even after tipping the whole staff, they wouldn't let me order from the dinner menu at 4:00pm because dinner starts at 5. I'd definitely try another hotel in town before staying here again.

The food took forever, orders were repeatedly mixed up, and I regretted dining here. The steak, especially the rib eye, didn't taste like beef to me, and the fatty part was disgusting. My room was stifling when I arrived, around 30 degrees inside, but when I asked for service they simply switched off the air conditioner. I only wanted it a little cooler, not turned off, especially with -30 degrees outside. They wouldn't let me change rooms. The toilet stank and still had brown stains from the previous customer, while the sink sometimes gave off a gross poop and sewer smell. The bathroom lock was behind the door and didn't work properly. The main door felt like it could break if kicked. For a hotel, they didn't provide any body wash, something I wouldn't complain about if they'd called themselves a motel. A complete waste of my money.
