Super 8 by Wyndham Hearst ON

I only ate at the restaurant, so I can't speak to the hotel. I stumbled on it after talking with a local business person. Please give restaurant reviews their own separate place to be posted, because the food and service here are Hearst's best-kept secret. In my not-so-humble opinion, it's the only place to eat in Hearst. I've tried almost every place here and been very disappointed. The food was tasty, good quality, and generous. I had the appetizer wings, then the burger steak with mashed potatoes, onions, gravy, and mushrooms. Yummy. The atmosphere felt warm, friendly, accommodating, and modern. The staff were patient, kind, efficient, and welcoming. I was very impressed. Way to go, ladies, six stars.

I was exhausted from driving and booked this place on a whim. Given the price range, I knew I shouldn't be too picky, but the experience was bizarre and left me shocked and furious. I've stayed in countless hotels, and this was the worst one. I had already paid the full room rate online before check-in. I was polite, handed over my ID, and got a key. The front desk clerk barely spoke English and said the system was down, so I'd need to come back later to register again. I agreed. About twenty minutes later, she called me back to the desk and tried to photograph my credit card, including its number, expiry date, and security code. I politely refused and asked her not to take the photo. Then she wrote down the card details by hand. Back in my room, she called again demanding my credit card information, saying her boss needed it. I flatly refused and went downstairs to pay a cash deposit instead. At 11:25 PM, she called once more to ask what time we'd check out the next morning. I couldn't get any rest. I strongly suspect their motives and wonder whether the owner is trying to take guests' personal information for misuse after they leave. The breakfast was terrible, the room smelled weird, and the heater was extremely loud all night. I'll contact my bank immediately, share this awful experience on social media, and report the conduct to the police. The hotel needs to understand this behavior and service are unacceptable and way over the line.

The room was nice, but the price didn't feel justified when the advertised amenities weren't there. The pool isn't heated, there's no hot tub, and a photo from a month ago showed one where there's now pool furniture. The front desk staff couldn't communicate in basic English. When I asked how much laundry cost, I was told there was no charge, though it's $2 to wash and $2 to dry. I also asked where it was and was gestured down the hall, but it's actually on the second floor.

It was quiet during my stay, and it seemed most guests were solo people traveling for work. I spent a lot of time using the pool and sauna, both nice to have in an area with not much to offer. The rooms were clean and easy to get to.
