The Salt Shaker Deli has a lovely look, and the server was friendly when helping us with allergies. The prices, portions, and general atmosphere were all good, and this was a perfectly fine dinner. Still, it felt underwhelming after all the praise we’d heard. My partner and I each had a drink, an appetizer, and a main. The cocktails were good and portions were hearty, but the food quality left a lot to be desired. My rose and garlic mussels were just okay, though the other sauces might be better. My partner’s Caesar salad was very average. The mains were middling: my lamb shank was tough, the mashed potatoes seemed overworked, and honestly the broccoli on the side was the best part. My partner ordered steak and mushroom pasta, but the medium-rare steak was very chewy despite her asking for medium. The mushroom sauce was one-note, with an overwhelming mushroom flavor. Service was average. We were looked after, but there didn’t seem to be extra effort put into the evening. I’ve worked in food service for years, from cozy chain restaurants to higher-end places, and the service didn’t match the very pleasing presentation and aesthetic of the restaurant. Maybe it was bad luck, maybe lunch would have been better than dinner, or maybe it was just an off night. Either way, it didn’t live up to the rave reviews.

After a disappointing chowder at the tourist-trap spot at Peggy's Cove, we came here and had the greatest clam and seafood chowder of my life. It was packed with strong, fresh flavors and had the perfect texture. The Cappriciosa pizza was good too, a well-balanced North American-style pizza. The staff were very friendly and the service fantastic all evening. I had a great experience at the Inn back in 2019, and the restaurant was delicious today. Never disappoints. Already dreaming about another bowl of that chowder.

Their homemade pasta is fantastic, and the winter gnocchi is especially good and unexpected. The daily specials are good too, and there’s a nice cocktail menu. I often recommend the restaurant to people passing through. It can be really hard to get a table when it’s busy, and the open room with dense seating can get quite loud.

It was a busy spot, but lunch was fantastic and we really enjoyed it. The Nova Scotia lox, or smoked salmon, sandwich was great, and the seafood soup was very generous. The Propeller pilsner was solid too. We also bought some of the wall art to take home. You could sit at the bar and mingle.

We had a party of seven and were seated, served, and out the door in about an hour. The service was attentive and timely, and the food arrived quickly. Everyone was phenomenally friendly, the food was delicious, prices reasonable, and the atmosphere fantastic. I can see why it’s popular. There are vegetarian options for people who don’t eat meat or fish, and it’s a lovely place for a walk after a hearty meal. The location is beautiful, but finding parking can be a real hassle. If you find a spot, it’s paid parking at an old-fashioned coin meter, no card, and costs $2 for an hour, so bring change. I didn’t stay here, only had lunch, and I recommend it.
