When I checked in, the guy at the desk said he hoped I wasn’t doing anything that would require calling the RCMP. I’d booked a room at the front, and it was noisy, so I asked if I could move to one of the quieter suites at the back. Then he told me a face cloth was missing from the room. I said I hadn’t taken it and don’t steal. I’m 66, look maybe 60, and drive a newer electric car. The front desk guy, who I felt was threatening to call the RCMP, then insisted he hadn’t accused me of stealing the face cloth. The hotel was mostly empty. He’s an older man with lots of moles, and it took him forever to process the deposit. Another hotel, a bit older and cheaper, was glad to have my business. This place gets minus one star.

We picked HLM after comparing websites for our 3 day visit, with price as a priority, and the room rate was reasonable. It’s an older motel, so the walls are thin, though the rooms are spacious. We asked for a renovated room at the quiet rear of the property, which cut down the street noise. Staff were courteous and helpful. There are restaurants close by, and downtown is walkable. You might have to dodge some homeless people along the way, but we had no problems.

A really restful stay, with customer service that went above and beyond. They kindly let us arrive hours after closing when we were coming in on the last ferry. 💜

We had a nice stay, though a few things could be better. The shower heads and soap could use an upgrade, and a mat by the door for shoes would be handy. It’d also be nice to have tea available along with the coffee. 😊

For the price, it was pretty decent, and the owner was really friendly. We were on the ground floor, though, and at night we could hear people talking and footsteps from upstairs through the thin walls. That was the one thing we didn’t like.
