On the evening of December 31, I was at this hotel with my husband and our four young children, ages 3, 5, and 6. Our room was extremely cold because the heat wasn’t working, and two of the kids’ hands were freezing. We reported it to the front desk, and a staff member confirmed the heat was out. We were moved to a second room, but it had the same problem. I was initially willing to put up with it to avoid more disruption for the children. Then a maintenance/service employee became aggressive and confrontational, yelling at front desk staff about why our room had been changed. I had told the front desk that if maintenance needed to enter, it should happen when I wasn’t alone with my children. I don’t allow strange men around them without my husband present, and I was told that would be respected. Instead, the same employee walked rapidly close behind me to the room. My husband was in the other room moving our belongings when the employee came in and immediately accused me of smoking. That is absolutely false. I don’t smoke, and my children were with me. He said, “I don’t know what kind of mom you are,” accused us of lying, claimed the room was fine, and started yelling at me. I felt threatened and unsafe. When I said we didn’t want to stay, he told me I had no choice and wasn’t allowed to leave. I went to the front desk to leave with the children, but he kept yelling at me in front of the staff and security, again saying I couldn’t leave with them. It was frightening, and I was genuinely afraid for my safety and theirs. The front desk later offered to change the room again and said the employee wouldn’t work the rest of the night, but that didn’t make me feel safe. As a service employee, he likely had access to room keys, and after his behavior I didn’t feel comfortable staying in the building. We left immediately. This was unacceptable, unsafe, and traumatic for our family. No guest should be spoken to, threatened, or intimidated this way, especially by hotel staff. I’m requesting a full refund and escalation to upper management or corporate leadership. This individual shouldn’t be working in an environment with families and children. I hope sharing this keeps another family from going through the same thing.

The room was just okay, and the hotel has only three floors. What bothered me most was the lack of clear information about extra charges. I booked online for two adults at $135, then was told parking cost $13-15 per night, which hadn’t been clearly mentioned beforehand. They also put a $100 security deposit on my credit card and said it would be returned the next day, but after checkout I was told it could take 2-6 days. The stay felt a bit overpriced with those added fees. The hotel food is expensive, though I liked having lots of food choices available through Uber Eats. An average experience, and clearer pricing would have helped.

We usually stay here and never had a problem, and the first night seemed fine. Then I found a bug bite, put the bug in something, and took it to the front desk. They said nobody else had complained and that it was weird. I asked for my money back so we could leave, but because it was the middle of the night and we had children, they moved us to a bigger room for the night. The employee said only two rooms were available, and one didn’t have working hot water. I said I wanted a room where everything worked and would speak to the manager in the morning. In the morning, I went down to ask for my money back instead of staying another night. The woman refused, saying they had switched us to a bigger room. I’ve called the health unit. After years of coming to this location, never again. The employee from last night was more sympathetic than the manager this morning. Disgusting.

I woke up at 4 am because someone clearing snow from the balcony was hitting the railing. The room was also dirty: there was a peanut on the floor, which is a serious concern because I’m highly allergic, black hairs all over the bed sheet, a huge dead fly on the floor, and a cigarette butt in the bathroom sink drain.

I slept better than I have in weeks, thanks to the super comfortable bed. The room was spotless, surprisingly spacious, well furnished, and had the modern amenities I needed. Staff at the Empress Inn Hotel were welcoming, professional, and attentive throughout. I also appreciated the complimentary water, fast Wi-Fi, and clean bathroom with good-quality toiletries. The hotel was close to everything I needed but still quiet at night. It’s great value for the price, whether you’re in town for business or a quick getaway. I highly recommend it and will come back.
