The setting was the first thing that struck us, it’s breathtakingly peaceful. The red house gave six adults and an infant plenty of room to be comfortable for the weekend. Given the current state of Rupert and how few amenities there are, staying here makes far more sense than paying for a downtown hotel. Trains go by regularly, though they didn’t bother us. A boat launch would be a useful addition, but I can see why putting one in would be difficult.

We watched otters and porpoises from the deck, and even the three friendly dogs on the property made the stay feel extra special. We’re dog people, so seeing them wander into the water was a treat. Our house was sockeye house, with comfortable beds, hot water, a well-equipped kitchen, and a deck with a bbq. The little touches were lovely too, like fresh greenery and flowers in what looked like antique bottles from the property, plus quality sheets and towels. The flower beds around the grounds were beautiful. Cassiar cannery was every bit as wonderful as I’d hoped, and then some. Thanks for sharing your piece of paradise. We hope to come back.

The low tide kept my girls busy turning over rocks to look for little creatures, and they loved spending time with Kuma,Betty and Veronica, the gentle, docile dogs. We stayed in Steelhead house, which was nicely equipped and had framed First Nations art I’d happily have at home. The big handmade cedar table was a great touch for dinner with our large family. The gated entrance also gave us a welcome sense of privacy, like Cassiar was our home during the stay. We’re always looking for unusual places to stay, and Cassiar Cannery was exactly that. The scenery is exceptional, and being away from the main centre of Prince Rupert made it even better. The view feels like a million dollars, while the price was less than the hotels in Prince Rupert and Rupert, where the buildings and stays seem pretty dull. I’m glad our money went to a family operation. Memories come from trying something beyond the usual chain hotel, and we’ll stay here again. I’m excited that a VIA rail stop may be possible to arrange, since we might take the train from Edmonton next time.

The place was clean, quaint, and right out over the ocean. I grew up by the water, so getting to share that kind of experience with my kids felt priceless. It was a perfect addition to our vacation, worth every penny, and I’m really grateful we got to stay. I’d recommend it.

I saw in my news feed that Justine, Mark and their team at Cassiar Cannery have received the Prince Rupert Tourism Excellence Award. Congratulations, it’s well deserved. My husband and I visited when we were cycling to Haida Gwaii, and I remember it as an amazing place created by a passionate couple. It’s a bucket list spot and a must visit if you’re in northern BC.
