After an hour and a half in the pool, the water started smelling bad and fishy. The waterside kept shutting off at random, and once it stopped while I was going down, burning my bottom. Not fun. Then we went upstairs to order food and found a very loud fire alarm going off two rooms down. My daughter has a history of trauma from a fire alarm, so she panicked. I called the front desk and was immediately put on hold, so I went down while she was freaking out. The front desk guy asked a woman from the laundry room to check it. She didn’t know the protocol and wondered aloud what to do if nobody was in there. We told her it was still an emergency alarm, so I followed her up. The room was being used by hockey players, but no one was there at the time, though all their stuff was. She couldn’t reach the alarm, so I climbed on the bed and tried the button. It stopped for three seconds, then started again. She was on the phone with someone who didn’t know what to do either, and they had to send someone else. It took a while, and I was ready to leave. I went to reassure my daughter and tell her it was probably a faulty wire. We got moved to another room, but the hall smelled strongly of marijuana, and within ten minutes there were slamming doors, loud people, and party music nearby. We didn’t feel safe and didn’t want to go back to the pool. We waited for our food, ate, then left and asked for a refund. We drove over an hour back to Winnipeg at 10 p.m. I’m waiting for the manager to call, since they only work mornings. Not a great experience.
The staff were friendly and helpful with anything we needed. Our room was clean and tidy, with comfortable queen beds, though there wasn’t much space to hang towels in the bathroom. The lobby and breakfast area had a modern, open feel. The pool, slide, and hot tub were really nice for everyone to enjoy, especially since Portage La prairie has more to offer in summer than winter. There were a few spots where the lobby flooring was lifting, and the same issue showed in the elevator, but it looked like an easy repair. It was my first stay at a Microtel Inn and Suites.
The staff were great at check-in and polite at checkout, and the rooms are amazing. The Indigenous art throughout the building is absolutely stunning. We thought we’d finally found a great place to stay on our travels east of home. We’d arrived in Winnipeg after a full day of flying and driving, coming from an amazing holiday in Cuba, and had been up since 6 a.m. We were heading west toward home but stopped because of the severe snowstorm. The hotel looked fantastic and had a great rate. Side note, if you have status, booking directly instead of through an app means you don’t pay taxes. We got to bed at 11 p.m., then were woken at 5:30 a.m. by loud rap music, drinking, and people yelling. We were travelling with family, and couldn’t believe they’d put that party beside us. Knowing it wasn’t going to stop, we packed up and went downstairs at 6 a.m. Breakfast didn’t start until 7, so we got none. We left at 6 and continued through the storm at 40 km per hour. Nobody tried to move the party or find us another room, or otherwise make it right. We’ll never return. A credit for a do-over, maybe?
The staff were warm, efficient, and easy to talk to from check-in through checkout. The rooms were clean and a good size, with all the amenities you’d expect. We had a shower-only room. I knew that when booking, though I would have liked a tub for our baby, and I believe some rooms do have one. Our one-year-old loved the clean pool, which was quiet every morning. Breakfast was excellent, with eggs, sausage, hash browns, and more, all tasty. It wasn’t crowded even on the long-weekend Sunday or Monday. I’d definitely recommend the hotel and would stay again when we’re back in Portage.
The rooms are spotless, the whole hotel smells clean, the pool is great and has a hot tub and a fun swirly slide, and breakfast is amazing. The pool was quiet, and they even have working USB-A and USB-C charging ports and a Keurig in the room. Fresh baked cookies for us and the kids were a nice touch. But the best part is the people. We stayed on the way to Winnipeg and loved it so much we chose to stay here again instead of overnighting in Winnipeg. At breakfast I had such a lovely chat with Joanna, who made wonderful food and went out of her way to make us feel at home. Matthew at the front desk also came to the rescue when I booked the wrong date through Expedia and couldn’t get my money back. He booked us for the right night, cancelled the incorrect reservation, and said I could contact them if anything went wrong. I’ve stayed in some pretty nice hotels and left good reviews before, but this one takes the cake. I’ve never seen customer service this on point. They price match Expedia deals, so bring the offer to the counter. 10000% recommend. Joanna and Matthew, thank you!
