The breakfast itself was nice, but even getting a second coffee felt like a problem. I was told it ran from 8 to 10, so I came back at 9. The owner acted annoyed, didn't offer a spoon or stir stick, then got angry when I picked up my own spoon from the table and told me to take the coffee to my room. He also refused to speak English, saying I was from another part of Quebec and should know French. Every time I went in or out, he rolled his eyes, and I felt uncomfortable just entering the building. As a solo woman, I wouldn't recommend staying here. I travel around Quebec and Ontario often, usually staying in budget motels or B&Bs six to ten times a year, and I've never felt this unwelcome, even in some questionable places where I've stayed alone. I arrived at 3:29 p.m. after traveling since 6 a.m. and just wanted to lie down. The owner asked if I had “a meter up my ass,” apparently because I needed every minute of my booking. I had to ask him to repeat it twice. I should have left then, but I was excited about my solo trip and my husband was due to join me two days later. I kept wishing I'd left at check-in. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

We left and found another good hotel in Old Town, even though we'd unfortunately paid in advance. The man running this place was nasty and rude, and the rooms were on the second or third floor up a narrow, steep, straight staircase with no elevator. The sheets looked old and worn, and the building felt dark and dirty, like a house of horrors.

The linens on the bed smelled unpleasant, which left serious questions about cleanliness. We were also turned away at 3:28 p.m. for a 3:30 check-in and couldn't wait in the lobby. At checkout, someone knocked right at 11 and told us to leave immediately. There was no flexibility or courtesy. The place felt like guests were being timed instead of welcomed. I wouldn't return or recommend it.

Breakfast was tasty, with croissants, crepe, fruit, and yogurt, though it may not suit everyone's diet and doesn't start before 8 a.m. The place still works well with or without breakfast. The owner has the mildly eccentric personality some other reviews mention. Our two-bedroom apartment was spacious and very comfortable, with a full kitchen and an extra Murphy bed. It's historic and homey rather than obviously luxurious, but we had what we needed. The building has plenty of character, sits about five minutes from the train station, and is within walking distance of many Quebec City sights.

Gerard's quirky sense of humour was a lot of fun, and breakfast was delicious, especially the homemade jam and Quebec maple syrup. The room was warm and had everything we needed. It's a charming B&B, close to everything in Old Quebec, including a very good full-size grocery store. I even enjoyed climbing the stairs. I'd stay here again when I'm back.
