The parking is a bit steep and tight in winter, and the thin walls mean you may hear the neighbours. Still, we had a wonderful four days at Apple Tree Inn and would come back. It felt like home, with a simple, cozy room, a small kitchenette, and snowy forest right outside the window. Our kids were thrilled to see seven deer wandering around the property. The location was great, within walking distance of downtown.

Old, but really clean, and worth what we paid. For a very reasonable nightly price, we got two full queen beds, a private balcony, mountain views, and a nice little kitchen.

On Christmas Day, I was alone in my room, missing my Son, who couldn’t make it, when someone quietly knocked. It was Jade, checking that I was okay. I’ll never forget that kindness, and I want to give her a special shout-out. I was already struggling after a long illness and the cancer death of my 15 year old Australian Shepherd Border Collie. I was overwhelmed with grief and couldn’t imagine how I’d manage without her. Dave and Nancy, the owners, treated me with so much kindness. I would have suffered a lot more without them. They genuinely care about people who can’t afford or find their own place to have a winter home. The rooms are clean and very affordable. I’ll definitely recommend The Apple Tree.

I booked through Airbnb, which seemed a little odd, though I guess hotels do that when they have empty rooms. Check-in was easy, and I unexpectedly ended up staying three nights in September 2025. My room had French doors facing the ravine, was clean and perfectly functional, and had a comfortable bed and a view you couldn’t beat. The barbecue was great to have. It’s a shame the old hot tubs are covered over, because soaking while looking over the ravine would have been amazing. Once it got dark, the room was really dark, so better lighting would help. I also had to cook there unexpectedly and had no utensils at all. A few single-serve plastic or bamboo disposable cutlery packs in the room, or available at the desk on request, would have helped. People expect too much sometimes: at $80 a night, compared with the average hotel at $200, don’t expect fancy. Go somewhere fancier if that’s what you want.

The lack of communication made for a terrible stay, and we’ll never come back. My husband and I had booked this for our first honeymoon near the small town, but Jade recommended we go to the villas in Fairmont without explaining what kind of place it was. We were left stranded in an apartment-style room. It was private, but everything nearby was closed and there weren’t enough toiletries or supplies. When we called housekeeping, we were told she wasn’t available. For breakfast vouchers and dinner, we had to drive 28 minutes into town, then make the same trip back. Everything was temporarily closed, so it was just back and forth.
