It was Vella, one of the breakfast attendants, who made our stay in Red Deer feel more like being with family than anywhere else I've stayed. I can't remember for sure if Vella was her name. She's an older Filipina woman with a grandma-like warmth, and the other staff call her "Mom" or "Mother." I came down for breakfast late, but she made fresh eggs for me and another guest, along with bacon. While we talked about Filipino etiquette at home and in business, she was sweet, informative, and encouraging about staying connected to culture at any age. I've recently started work in healing and Indigenous circles, where cultural connection comes up often, so I value hearing perspectives from elder Filipinos from "back home." Even as we chatted, she kept giving the other guests proper attention. Please say hi for me if you see a breakfast attendant whose name starts with V. The room was clean and cozy without feeling cramped, and the bathroom was oddly huge. The bed was comfortable and clean, and it had the basic amenities I expected. I was also pleasantly surprised to find a shower chair. I didn't need to use it, but I have ME/chronic fatigue from long covid, so it was good to see a budget hotel consider disabilities. The gym equipment selection was good and the area was clean and well-maintained, according to my friend. Breakfast had good choices, I had a balanced meal before our event, and service was good. We asked for a scent-free room because of sensitivities, but it was obvious they'd used scented cleaning products before check-in. Luckily, we could run the fan and air-conditioner to air it out. The website says Westerner Park is a 15 minute walk away, which is why my friend booked here, but it was more like a 15-20 minute drive. The hotel is across from The Donut Mill, though. I started writing this review soon after our stay and got interrupted. I normally wouldn't bother starting over, but I wanted to recognize her. I've stayed everywhere from small budget places to luxury villas with private pools, and Vella made this stay feel like home. Five stars for her.

The pool is only a kiddy pool with one slide and a small hot tub, so don't be swayed by the pool ad. Our room was average and the beds weren't comfortable. We were in town for a tournament and had an early game, but hallway noise continued despite the 10 pm quiet time, with people drinking and hanging out there. Booking was difficult too: I gave specific dates and they still got them wrong, then said they hadn't received my completed advanced check-in after sending me a link, so I had to do it twice. It was a below average stay and I'm pretty disappointed.

For the price, this stay was a disappointment and we won't come back. We were there for hockey, and my kids and all the other kids came out of the pool coughing, with irritated eyes, skin, and lungs from how bad the chlorine was. I called ahead to arrange a playpen for my baby, but there wasn't one in the room. The first one they brought was broken, the sides wouldn't lock and the mattress was completely broken or missing. The second had the same mattress problem and bits of food in it, so there was no way I could put my baby in it. The 10 pm quiet time didn't stop people running up and down the halls and banging on the floor above us until after midnight. Breakfast was really awful too. My son got undercooked eggs, and the only half-decent thing was the "meats".

The hot tub was the biggest letdown. My wife had specifically asked me to find one for this trip, but it never got hot during our two nights and three days there. When I asked the front desk on the first day, they said it had recently been serviced and would be hot again in a few hours. Two days later, it still wasn't. We also left behind a souvenir album from a concert we attended, and they had no record of it. The queen bed was actually a double, but that was only a minor inconvenience.

On a business trip, I reported a problem with the TV in my room after checking in on Monday Sept 22. The woman at the front desk upgraded me to a business suite right away. Thanks to Microtel for the above-average service. I've stayed here more than once because it's clean, quiet, and affordable, just what I want when I'm away from home.
