Chipman Hill Suites - Senator Dever House

We usually stay at the Sydney St. location, but chose this one because it was nearer to our venue. We like Chipman Suites, but had a rough night here. The heat was around 12ish when we arrived, so I nudged it up a little because the room felt chilly. After we went out for four hours, we came back to a sauna. We switched the heat off, but the radiant floors kept the warmth in, and there was no way to open a window. Opening the hallway door was our only option. We managed to sleep until about 2:30, then the heat became unbearable. My husband went into the hall for some relief, and we kept tossing and turning until around 6, when it finally cooled a bit. Now we’re going home to catch up on sleep. I wouldn’t return to this location because of that.

The restored Victorian house has lovely character, with stained glass, sun rooms, sleigh beds, and high ceilings. As you’d expect from a house of that age, some rooms have size limitations, but the charm and homey common areas were a hit with our family. We were in town for a reunion of 40+ people, and the Chipman Hill team helped fit us all into one property, with the overflow at a nearby one. It was only a 10 minute walk between the two, so we could all spend time together. The service was excellent, and they helped arrange tours, sightseeing, and catering. We walked downtown St John for meals several times. Questions got quick answers, and room changes were easy. Nobody complained about their room, except when they had to go back upstairs for a forgotten hat. We’d definitely stay again, 10/10.

A cozy place with roomy accommodations and a convenient spot in the city. The rooms have complete kitchens, so you can explore the city and still cook for yourself if that’s what you prefer. The main places in the city centre are all within walking distance.
