Sandman Signature Surrey-Guildford Suites

We stayed at the Sandman Hotel in Surrey, BC for about three weeks on a work trip, with our team booking roughly 15 rooms. After emailing the hotel about our concerns and hearing nothing back, I wanted to share what happened. The front desk staff we met were generally polite and friendly, but the ongoing problems were downplayed, and management never seemed to respond with the urgency or professionalism the situation called for. The most serious issue was finding cockroaches in the kitchen and bedroom area. I recorded them and showed the video to management right away, but there was little urgency, no clear discussion of pest control or extermination, and no sign they saw it as a serious health concern. They just asked if we wanted to change rooms. We did, then found another cockroach in the new room, which strongly suggests it wasn't limited to one room. Other problems started in the first room. It smelled strongly unpleasant, and the toilet was clogged when we arrived. Soon it overflowed badly, spreading sewage water across the bathroom floor. I cleaned it up myself. Even after I asked multiple times, no one properly sanitized or mopped the area; they handed us a plunger in case it happened again. In the second room, the dishwasher was broken and a door hinge seemed damaged. The door suddenly slammed open and cut my leg. Cleanliness around the hotel was poor, too. The floors in both rooms were so sticky and dirty that we felt we had to keep our shoes on. Dirty dishes, pots, and pans from restaurant operations were often left in piles in the hallways. Our balcony looked straight onto a restaurant patio under construction. With construction noise and strong restaurant smells coming in, we couldn't open the windows for fresh air. Parking was a recurring problem. Restaurant traffic seemed to use much of the main-level parking, leaving the hotel lot full several times. Sometimes our only practical choices seemed to be handicap spots or parking outside in an area that didn't feel safe. Also, anyone working out in the glass-walled lobby gym is visible to everyone entering the hotel or restaurant. I wouldn't recommend this hotel, especially for extended stays, work travel, or anyone expecting clean, safe, well-managed accommodations. Our team travels regularly for work, and we often considered Sandman properties. This stay seriously changed how we view the brand. It was a very disappointing combination of dirty conditions, pests, safety hazards, parking trouble, and management's lack of a meaningful response.
