Shirley led the wildlife tour the next morning, and it was my favorite part. She clearly loves introducing people to the animals and knows them very well. I also enjoyed the evening fireside stories with her. This was my first visit to Metis Crossing, about an hour from Edmonton along the beautiful North Saskatchewan River. I spent one night in a star gazing dome. It was comfortable and well equipped, and on the clear night I had, seeing the stars through the windows was amazing. I had two tasty meals at the bistro, and all the staff were friendly and helpful. I’ll go back.

The gift shop was disappointing, with lots of items that weren’t made by local artists. I noticed beaded earrings made in Peru, for example. That felt like a huge missed opportunity. It’s a shame for Metis Crossing to stock items that aren’t made by native Canadian artists, especially orange shirt day items. That’s why I gave it two stars. I came for brunch. The food was quite good, though the prices are high, which may explain the low turnout. The staff were all friendly and the place is beautifully designed. It was lovely to see people sewing in the learning center.

The knowledge holders and elders are so talented and amazing. The property is gorgeous, the food was amazing, and everyone on staff was welcoming. I highly recommend taking part in any of the programs they offer.

The staff we met were kind and welcoming, and were happy to tell us about the Lodge and the history of the Metis in the area. It was my first visit yesterday, and wow, the building and grounds are stunning. I can’t wait to come back and try the skywatch domes!

Metis Crossing used to be affordable for families and Metis people who wanted to get involved in cultural activities. Now it feels like a tourist attraction and a money grab. They charge more for a mediocre room than even the fanciest hotel in Edmonton. When there are food events, the prices are insanely high too. I want to know why Metis Crossing shifted away from culture and toward money gouging. I can guarantee they’ll reply with something like, “We’ll talk to the management team to make things better,” blah blah. At the end of the day, they’re not going to change, and they’ll gouge everyone in the future.
