Convenience is the one saving grace here. There’s plenty to do and see within walking distance. But lately homeless encampments have appeared, sadly as in many cities over the past few years, so I’d be cautious after nightfall. The place isn’t hygienic, though it works as somewhere to shower and sleep. It’s not for the faint-hearted, and I definitely wouldn’t bring children. For a woman traveling alone, I’d expect to be treated very poorly, and it didn’t feel like somewhere I’d want to be outside after dark, given the surroundings and the general feel of the building and its clientele. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. I travel frequently, especially in India, so this sort of place won’t shock me, but others should be prepared. Avoid booking services: there’s always some kind of mix-up or glitch, and you may never see your room or money again. Bring cash, because the card reader always seems to have trouble reading your card’s chip. I’ve seen this kind of practice many times in my business travels, both in the attitude and the environment.

The room smelled awful, and the heater didn’t work, which made the night extremely uncomfortable. When I told the staff, they said it had been working fine before and they didn’t know what was wrong, though the state of the room made it seem clear it wasn’t functioning properly. They gave me a small portable heater instead of fixing it, but it couldn’t heat a room that large. A very disappointing place to spend the night.

Price was the only good thing. The hotel smelled like a urinal cake, the bed had an odor, and the toilet ran nearly the whole two days we were there. The bathroom was disgusting under the toilet seat and anywhere else you couldn’t see from above. The shower curtain and most of the bathroom had mould, and we had to ask for a kettle to make tea and coffee. We tried asking the chamber maids for basic supplies, but they looked completely lost because none of them spoke English. After a full day walking around Victoria, we returned to find a space heater running in our room, which was over thirty degrees. The front desk guy said, looking confused, that I’d asked for a heater and for him to put it in while we were out. I definitely hadn’t. He’d also replaced a burnt-out light bulb while we were gone, which really wasn’t cool. My partner and I will never stay here again. Beware of the homeless camp right next to it, too.

We booked two King rooms for our two families for September 8-9 and asked at check-in if they could be next to or across from one another. The front desk immediately said no and didn’t seem interested in checking. The room directly across from us was empty then, but was assigned to someone else without explanation. Cleanliness was unacceptable, even for a budget hotel. The bathroom was dirty, the coffee machine clearly hadn’t been washed, and we found clothing from a previous guest under the bed, which strongly suggested the room hadn’t been properly cleaned. Photos of these problems are available and have been uploaded. During our two-night stay there was no housekeeping, the sheets and towels weren’t changed, and there was no door hanger to request or decline cleaning. The room stayed as it was from check-in to checkout. A light wasn’t working; we reported it several times to the front desk and support, but nobody came to fix it. The elevator also jolted hard and suddenly as it moved, which felt unsafe. The stay was very disappointing because of the poor cleanliness, lack of basic service, unhelpful staff attitude, and ignored maintenance and safety concerns. Even for a budget hotel, it fell well below minimum expectations. I’m leaving this review to warn future guests and hope management takes responsibility and improves hygiene and service.

For the cheapest place in the area, you get what you pay for. The sheets were old and a bit stained, the shower had mould, and housekeeping seemed to do little beyond making the bed. The elevator was fine, though. Reviews calling it the worst are definitely overreacting. It has a room, a bed, and a bathroom, and that’s enough to make it better than sleeping outside, marginally. Would I recommend it? Probably not. Everyone needs to relax, it’s not the worst hotel on the planet.
