The James Bay Inn has the feel of a bit of Victoria history, and I’d gladly stay again. It’s a charming, artsy, imperfect place, creaky in spots, set in a fun neighborhood central to everything. I found the pub and restaurant downstairs hearty, delicious, and reasonably priced, with lots of locals there. It’s a 115-year-old historic hotel, not a Waldorf Astoria. There’s no air conditioning, but the windows open easily and old-growth trees shade the building, so you probably won’t need it. The rooms are small, the bathrooms larger, and there are real glass drinking vessels. The beds are well cared for and comfortable, with crisp, soft sheets. Don’t expect high-thread-count Egyptian cotton, remote-controlled air conditioning, or a 60-inch TV. I enjoy those hotels too, but this isn’t one of them. What you get instead is classic Victoria charm, clean surroundings, and engaging service. After a day exploring, it’s a nice spot to come back to. Cheers.

We went to the pub both nights because Cory was so funny and fun, and had the whole room under control. We wanted to take her home! Breakfast was wonderful both mornings too. I didn’t catch our waitress’s name, but she was adorable, originally from Alberta, and had been at JB Inn for six years. Roy at the front desk was such fun and so organized. He made a terrific first impression, and the room was beautifully Victorian and cozy. The staff are what make the hotel. Keep treating them well, because they’re the reason for its success. We’ll stay nowhere else as long as these folks are here. Truly outstanding, 12 out of 10.

The pub meal was delicious and the service excellent. The hot turkey sandwich tasted just like the one we make at home, the cranberry sauce was the best I’ve ever had, and the chowder was wonderful. We stayed in a smaller room, which was cozy and comfortable, and the hotel was quiet and charming, full of warmth and history. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Each floor has its own antique furnishings, and there’s something interesting everywhere, from Tiffany-style lamp shades to Emily Carr reproductions. It’s exactly what a quaint historic hotel should be. We’d love to return, maybe in a larger suite.

Beautiful old hotel, and the beds were so comfortable. The staff were really friendly and helpful, and it was easy to walk down to the harbourfront and restaurants. Perfect location. I’d definitely recommend it and stay again.

I loved my four-night stay here, especially as someone who used to live in Victoria. If quaint, charming places are your thing, this is a must. My room had a comfortable queen bed and was clean and well kept thanks to the housekeeper. Service was excellent, and there’s a restaurant downstairs. The neighborhood was quiet and felt safe to walk around at night. It’s about a 10-minute walk to the Inner harbour area, close to the ocean and Beacon Hill Park, with free parking beside the building. The lobby is lovely, with replica artworks of Emily Carr’s paintings. Just be aware that it’s an old building with 12 steps up to the front entrance.
