The Chedi Andermatt

The Chedi Andermatt made our anniversary stay on Tuesday, January 20th, feel special from beginning to end. The reception and concierge teams were consistently professional, attentive, and genuinely helpful. Dinner and a visit to the fumoir made for a lovely evening. Alessio welcomed us and arranged a beautiful table decorated all around with rose petals, creating a romantic, almost magical setting for me and my girlfriend. His care and attention made it unforgettable. We chose the Asian tasting menu, with wine pairing selected and served by Leo, the sommelier. Each wine matched its course beautifully and brought out the menu's flavors. The next morning, breakfast offered a rich mix of hot and cold dishes, all high quality and beautifully presented. After checking out, we went to the spa. Priscilla explained everything we needed to know, and Antonio, a professional and attentive staff member, guided us through the spa and made it a relaxing experience. Before leaving, Davide welcomed us in the lobby and made two excellent cocktails, giving us one last chance to unwind in the beautiful setting. The service and attention to detail exceeded our expectations. We had a memorable stay and will certainly return.

The spa was excellent, though a retreat happening at the same time had made it quite crowded and taken away some of the calm we wanted. The property itself is beautiful, but we left The Chedi Andermatt with mixed feelings about the service, which didn't consistently feel at the 5-star level you expect from a hotel at the very top of the market. We arrived about 1.5 hours before check-in, so it was understandable that the room wasn't ready. The team kindly let us use the spa while we waited. Still, no one was outside to greet us or point us to parking when we drove up, and we had to go into the lobby to ask. The luggage handling during that wait felt unprofessional. Our suitcases had already been moved away. When we asked for our swimwear, staff took us to a back-of-house entrance to get it ourselves instead of returning the bags or helping discreetly. There were meme-style pictures on the wall, including a Winnie-the-Pooh meme in a suit, which felt out of place for a luxury property. They left us alone there, and it wasn't clear how to get out, which was uncomfortable and not what you'd expect as a guest. There was also a difference in how our group was welcomed. We were escorted to our room, while the second party traveling with us was simply given key cards and a room number. This isn't a matter of needing extra attention, but of expecting the basics of luxury hospitality at this price. Several staff members also didn't speak German, which made communication less smooth. A stunning property with excellent facilities, but the service lacked the refinement and consistency of a true 5-star hotel.

There has clearly been a lot of investment in the hotel's facilities and marketing, but I found the atmosphere hard and cold, without much warmth or hospitality. The promotion may have raised my expectations, leaving a noticeable gap between what I expected and what I experienced. The physical details are excellent: the bathrobes are Pola and very good quality, the mattresses are Hästens, and the soft drinks in the room are complimentary. Check-in was acceptable, and staff introduced the facilities. Still, the welcome card in my room addressed my male companion as a woman, a mistake I've never seen in all my hotel stays. Service often fell short. Staff rarely greeted guests in the corridors and sometimes hurried past. For a Michelin two-key hotel, I'd expect butler-style service as a basic standard. This is the only two-key property I've stayed in that offered virtually no feeling of personalized or butler service. Breakfast was quite average, with very limited choices and very few vegetables. The breakfast room also felt crowded, with tables too close together. The pool felt rather cold, and guests have to wear swimwear in the sauna.

The staff were really friendly, and we appreciated how welcoming the hotel was to kids as parents. They put lots of nice little details for our baby in the room. The food was really good, and the massage was lovely too. The spa water was way too cold, though. Such a shame.
