The Lodge

We were a group of friends from the UK and spent a week here with our motorbikes. Churwalden was a superb base for riding in the region, with lots of places to eat and drink, 24-hour fuel stations that took UK cards, and some motorbike shops nearby. Ollie, the caretaker who lives in a top-floor apartment, was there if we needed help while otherwise staying almost invisible. We all agreed we'd use the Lodge again if we came back to the area. There was room for a couple of vans and our 10-plus bikes, and plenty of storage for riding gear, so we didn't have to haul it between the sleeping area and downstairs. The Lodge has comfy beds in different single and double layouts, three shower rooms, five toilets, a big self-catering kitchen, a large dining area, and a relaxing lounge with soft furnishings. There's UK television too, if you want to keep up with the soaps. Supermarkets are about a minute's walk away, along with a nice bar and a few restaurants for when you don't want to cook. The staff all spoke good English, useful since our German wasn't especially good. It's on the main road through town, so getting in and out was easy. Double glazing kept the noise down with the windows shut. We came during temperatures in the high 30s C, and nights were comfortable and quiet without air conditioning, which the Lodge doesn't have or particularly need. The mountain lifts are close by if you take a day off the bikes. There's been a change of ownership since the pandemic.
