The views of the town and Alps were impeccable, and the gin bar was outstanding. This charming Art Noveau hotel sits at the top of the hill in Engelberg and has an old-world feel, like something from a James Bond film. You do need a lift to reach the hotel on foot, since it's up the hill, but that’s very convenient.

The service is excellent, and the food is enjoyable. It’s a good family hotel, with great family rooms and a games room just for the kids. The path to the Titlis valley station is a bit challenging, but definitely manageable.

It was unbearably hot in my room, probably around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and there’s no air conditioning or fans anywhere in the hotel. The halls and lobby smelled terrible, and the tunnels to reach the hotel felt terrifying to walk through at night. Staff were rude from the moment we arrived, acting as if we were in the way while we were just trying to check in. When I asked the front desk a question, she only shrugged. The sole bottle of 3-in-1 shampoo, conditioner, and body wash was poor quality and disappointing. This is the most disgusting hotel I’ve ever stayed in, with terrible service. I’d never recommend it; there are so many better locations.

The rooms were a great size, and the gin bar inside was cool. It’s a very cute spot in town, though it takes some effort to get from ground level up to the hotel. Our view was blocked by construction and scaffolding, and breakfast was just okay.
