Dinner at Bären Stube was a highlight. We had the fine-dining course menu, with local ingredients, thoughtful presentation, and creative dishes that never felt overcomplicated. We came to Appenzell for our anniversary weekend and were very glad we chose this place. Our room looked out toward the Steinblick in Löwen, across green Swiss hills to the Alpine peaks. Getting to Alpenzell by car takes about 10 minutes, and Gonten train station is close by. The staff were exceptionally attentive and welcoming. It was the best hospitality experience we’ve had in Switzerland, and I’d highly recommend it for a weekend away.

Our rental car got a flat on the way over and had to be towed, leaving us stranded about 25 minutes from the hotel. They kindly came to pick us up. We spent two nights in the stunning historic room in the Lowen Haus. It felt like being in an Architecture Digest video. Dinner at the a la carte restaurant was excellent, and the meals were probably the best I had during my week in Switzerland. The area around the hotel is pretty quiet, but Gonten station is just a short walk away, with trains to Appenzell town taking about 15 minutes.

The old wooden paneling and historic architecture give Appenzeller Huus Löwen a lot of character, while the modern touches and warm welcome make it feel comfortable. It’s a peaceful little retreat in the Appenzell countryside, whether you’re there to hike, spend time with family, or just get away from the usual routine. There’s a sense that the details have been thought through, and the place has an authentic Swiss feel. I found it a lovely spot for a break and a stay I’ll remember.

We had three lovely nights in one of Switzerland’s most beautiful areas. Sometimes a place just clicks, with the hotel, location, and staff all coming together. We’ll be back!
