Berghaus Niederhorn

We'd already paid and were tired from hiking, so being told to move so rudely felt unnecessary. We sat on the cushioned seats and waited, but no menu or waitress appeared. We went to the self-service bar for drinks, and while we were halfway through them she arrived and snapped that this wasn't a self-service area. Having separate sections is fair enough, but they could be kind about it, and either serve people or let them help themselves.

I arrived late in the evening, and a heavy storm came on. They said they only had food for guests because I was a tourist. What I did get was awful for the price, and expensive for no good reason. When the restaurant was closing, they told me to get out, even though outside was miserable: fog, heavy rain, and I wasn't prepared for it. I asked for a room, but they said I hadn't spoken to the manager, so they couldn't give me one. The way I was treated was awful, like they were animals with no understanding beyond what they'd been told. You can draw your own conclusions.

The view is wonderful, so it might be worth stopping for a drink. The food, though, was pitiful: very low quality for those “elevated” prices. The Rösti had been made hours earlier, reheated, and was bone dry and tasteless. The Kalbsbratwurst wasn't fried at all, just warmed in the oven. When I was young we called this “Mensa-Frass.” It's shameful to imagine foreign tourists being served this as Swiss hospitality.

Tourist prices for really poor food, mostly preheated fast food.
