Hotel Emmental

The outside looks nice, but I can't recommend this hotel, even though I love Thun. We asked beforehand for an accessible room with a large window because of our accessibility needs, and I called specifically after seeing the bad reviews. Instead, we were assigned a room four flights up. The staff were unhelpful and standoffish, and nobody offered to carry our luggage, despite my husband being 70 and having a heart problem. They just watched. The room bore no resemblance to the photos: the sink was in the middle, and a transparent sliding door separated a tiny toilet from the rest, with no privacy. After all my requests, I was shocked to get that room and felt they were punishing us. There was no coffee or tea, and it was extremely hot. We had to plug in the tiny fan over the sink, which felt like an electrocution hazard. The hotel has serious safety issues and should be closed until they're addressed.

We paid almost $300 for one night and were extremely disappointed. The room had no windows or air conditioning and was stifling, while noise from the street intersection was incredibly loud. There's no front desk, the restaurant waiter gives you the key, and when we asked for help carrying luggage up two flights of stairs, nobody was available. For this price, we expected basics like an elevator and a quiet room. It was unacceptable. Be aware. I don't understand the four- and five-star reviews, this barely rates one star.

The views of the old castle and surrounding mountains were stunning, and the rooms were spotless. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was the one thing that could be better, since the selection was quite limited and could use more variety. The hotel was absolutely amazing.

We spent four nights at Hotel Emmental, and Jana greeted us with a pleasant smile each morning. She was meticulous, attentive to guests' needs, and clearly passionate about her work. Her service was top notch, please give her a pat on the back. Restaurants and supermarkets are close by, and the location is excellent. The car park is a short walk down the street and very convenient. I'd happily recommend Hotel Emmental to friends.
