Bed & Breakfast La Val

The village is lovely, the hosts are nice, and breakfast is good. I really liked it here.

Breakfast was generous, and the two hosts made us feel very welcome. Our room was beautiful and had everything we needed, plus two little balconies facing south with a great mountain view. We’d definitely recommend this B&B.

We spent two nights here for about €150 a night, breakfast included, and there was free parking outside. The mountain view from the clean room and its two balconies was lovely. Still, the stay had several problems. Mr. Engel’s welcome felt brief and impersonal. We weren’t told about things to do nearby or given the Wi-Fi details until we asked. There was no key for the toilet, and the wooden bed reminded me of a child’s bed from Poco. Breakfast was plentiful, but some blackberries were moldy, which put me off. The breakfast setup was the worst part for us. It was served in the Engel family’s living and dining area, where Mrs. Engel was audibly doing household chores and Mr. Engel worked at his computer just two meters away. We felt very uncomfortable there. We also found the location poor for cyclists: there are hardly any cycle paths, and attractions are far from Trin. Cycling toward Flims in the Rhine Gorge means riding 4-5 km on a busy main road, and the road is hard to avoid in the other direction too. The neighbor’s paramedic work also meant loud activity from around 7 a.m. We booked directly with the Engel family but got no checkout time. Around 11, someone knocked while my wife was still packing her last things and said she needed to go in, even though they’d seen me putting our suitcases and bicycles in the car and unpacking. At checkout, Mr. Engel said goodbye quickly and shut the door without asking how the stay had been. Ms. Engel didn’t say goodbye at all. We found that disappointing.

We stayed in the Edelweiss room and found it roomy, comfortable, and very clean. The bathroom was spacious too, with underfloor heating, and we had two balconies. The owners were attentive and friendly. Breakfast was a treat, especially the fruit salad, homemade jam, and other surprises, with plenty to choose from. Trin has a post bus to Chur and Flims/Laax, and Flims valley station is about a 10-minute drive away. We felt at home and would gladly return.
