Alpenrose Hotel & Garden

The staff were attentive, and breakfast in the morning was nice. This older hotel has plenty of charm and is in a handy spot, about five minutes from the train. The rooms are clean and simple, though they aren’t modern. If you want a sleek room packed with the latest amenities, this probably won’t suit you.

The hotel and breakfast were okay, but my kids used the hot tub that morning before we left and came away with horrible rashes all over their bodies from Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. The tub had not been properly cleaned and maintained. Really gross.

The garden was a lovely place to unwind after exploring, with breathtaking views of the Jungfrau. We also found the hotel convenient, just a three-minute walk from the train station, and breakfast was included in the price and good quality. The rooms are dated, but clean and very well kept. We felt we got a lot for the price: it has the feel of a nice two- or three-star hotel, with five-star service and charm. The ladies at check-in were sweet, welcoming, and helpful, and the kind woman serving breakfast was always smiling and checking that everyone had what they needed. A fantastic stay at Alpenrose!

The building dates back to 1881, and you can tell the owners take the service, upkeep, and cleanliness seriously. The staff were professional and polite, and answered all my questions and requests, mostly about attractions and transport, plus changes to our jacuzzi bookings as our travel plans shifted. Monsieur Andre was there before our tour group arrived to welcome us to Alpenrose Hotel. We had one dinner, boboti beef and vege, and two breakfasts. There was a good cold selection of meat and vegetables, plus hot food including a nicely cooked quiche, moist but not dry or wet. Good coffee and several choices of great Twinnings Tea, too. Everything from the shared WC to our bedroom was clean. The mattress had good support, the pillows were comfortable, and the blankets were warm and clean. The bathroom was immaculate, and small but usable by two people at once. The hair, body, and soap products smelled like Sofitel soap, which was heartwarming, and there was complimentary lotion. Wilderswil train and bus station is a three- to four-minute walk away, and there are two supermarkets here as well. The downsides: three floors and no elevator, and the floors creak loudly in the middle of the night. Danke schön Alpenrose Hotel & Gardens for the professionalism and hospitality!
