The cold, fresh water from the nearby Ibex fountain was a lovely perk. We spent two nights here while exploring Zermatt and the surrounding area, and were happy with the quality for the price in this part of town. Check-in is at the neighbouring Hotel Tannenhof. We arrived around 1:30, before the 3pm check-in, and Basil was welcoming and had our room ready. He also shared weather information and gave us paper maps and other details. The hotel is about a 450m, mostly flat walk from Zermatt station. Our room was very clean, with high-quality bedding and large bath towels, hand towels, and face washers. It had a small flat-screen TV, a safe requiring a CHF50 deposit, a walk-in shower with shower gel and a bar of hand soap, and a little desk with two chairs. There was a small wardrobe, with hangers on one side and shelves on the other. No tea or coffee facilities, though you can ask reception for cups of hot water. The bed sank when we sat or lay on it, perhaps because it was a box spring, and wasn't especially comfortable. There were spare blankets and small pillows in the wardrobe. The lift stops between floors, so you need to use half a flight of stairs either up or down. Some rooms use a shared bathroom, and it can get noisy when guests let the doors slam.

Breakfast at Tannenhof was a highlight, with homemade breads, croissants, cheeses, plus the usual yogurt and cereal. We even had a view of the Matterhorn from our table. Francesco checked us in at the hotel next door, Tannenhof, and was polite and helpful. Our double room had a balcony and enough space for the two of us. Ask the front desk if you need a hairdryer. Such a charming place, glad we picked it.

The staff really made the stay for me. They were so helpful with suggestions for scenic viewpoints and local restaurants, which made the visit memorable. The room was impressively clean and had enough space to feel comfortable. Hotel Alpina is around a 10-15 minute walk from the train station, a reasonable distance. I was very pleased and would stay again on my next trip to Zermatt.

For the most part, we were comfortable, but the pillows were useless, going paper thin as soon as you put your head down, and hot water wasn't always available. As other reviews mention, check-in is at another hotel very close to Alpina. We also found some of the staff somewhat rude, especially the cleaning lady. While checking out, we'd left our bags at reception for a few minutes. She was standing there with her vacuum cleaner, so I asked if I should move them outside. She snapped, “YES!” and then more or less chased me out with the vacuum while I carried the luggage.

The room was clean and had a nice balcony, though it was small. The location was great and we enjoyed the stay. Just note the elevator stops between floors, so you have to take half a flight of stairs up or down.
