The spa became part of our daily routine after I overlooked it for the first couple of days: sauna, steam room, a huge stainless-steel hot tub that I first mistook for a small pool, a cold plunge, a warm relaxation room and a heated outdoor area where you could nap bundled up under a heat lamp in the cold air. We spent a week at this lovely hotel in Zernez with Christian und Andrea Patscheider Emmenegger while attending the Olympics in Livigno and taking a few days to ski. Before planning the games, I’d never heard of Zernez or this part of Switzerland. It’s a sleepy town in winter, but cross-country/langlauf skiing is right on the doorstep, and a couple of train stops get you to St. Moritz, Klosters/Davos, Livigno in Italy and Zuoz, a cross-country/langlauf haven with a small local ski area. In summer, being right by the National Park Svizze must be magical. Service was top-class, even though our German was poor and our French only a little better. The dinners were superb and portions were large, so be warned. The beef comes from their own farm; we especially loved the beef stew and spaetzle. The local wine was very nice, including local nebbiolo, the grape used for Barolo and Barbaresco, and syrah, with other choices too if you want to go big, including Super Tuscans. Our junior suite was lovely, with lots of storage, his-and-her sinks, a huge shower, a couple of large reading chairs, big windows and French doors that opened and tilted inward to the outside. Breakfast had the usual mountain spread of cheeses and hams, cereals, bircher muesli with toppings, yoghurts, boiled eggs, unlimited tea and coffee, and assorted breads. There was plenty of food. The owners and hosts were incredibly charming, as was the staff. We’ll come back with our dog.

The owners took such care to make sure our stay was pleasant, and the trains and buses are within walking distance. It’s a beautiful, well-decorated family-run hotel that’s been in the family for generations, with wonderful food and a spa featuring dry and infrared saunas, a steam room, cold plunge, warm outdoor pool and relaxation area. We used it as a base for the Olympics and would love to return in summer to hike the National Parc. This amazing three-star place deserves five stars. I could say much more, but I highly recommend it.

We picked Hotel Baer and Post at the last minute for our trip to Parc Naziunal Svizzera and got lucky. The room was much nicer than expected, stylish, comfortable and very clean. The owner checked us in, was extremely kind and accommodating, and even helped us with our poor German. He said we’d arrived in time for dinner, and we’re glad he did because we highly recommend eating here. My husband chose the menu with delicious seasonal dishes, while I had the delicious Beef Ravioli. Daniela, our waitress, was polite and incredibly helpful despite our communication difficulties. I can’t recommend this unexpected gem enough if you’re in Zernez or near Parc Naziunal Svizzera.

I stayed at another hotel in Zernez, but came back here twice to eat because I really liked the food and service. Service around town generally wasn’t great, but the staff here were genuinely friendly, quick and attentive. The food was excellent and good value for money, which is why I chose to return during my stay.

The half-board menu was superb, beautifully presented and delicious. The rooms are high standard, with an alpine feel, and the staff were amazing, friendly and attentive, with nothing too much trouble. This hotel deserves five stars. Don’t miss this jewel in the Engadine.
