For roughly CHF 300 a night, this was indefensible. I travel for work half the year and have stayed all over the world, but the Rex in Zurich was the worst hotel experience I've had in Switzerland. We were there for one night with my two exhausted, small children. Zero stars. Avoid it, especially with kids. The room was passable until bedtime. Street noise came in all night, and on a day Zurich reached 38°C there was no air conditioning, not even a fan. My children couldn't sleep comfortably, and the night was ruined. There was no welcome at the door, just machines. When a staff member eventually appeared, she didn't greet me and left me to complete check-in online, as though I didn't belong in the lobby. Reception, I later learned, is centralized across several hotels. When my kids needed to brush their teeth and I found the sink blocked, there was no way to open the drain. I called for help. They didn't take the call, and the line was hung up five times in a row, seemingly to avoid answering. When someone finally picked up, I was told it was a phone problem. I explained the blocked sink and that my two kids needed to brush their teeth. The response was, “What hotel are you at?” Once I gave the location, they said, “I have no one to help right now.” Nobody came or even checked. No greeting, no comfort, no air, no working bathroom, and no help with basic needs.

Cozy rooms were well looked after, and staff were reachable by phone whenever we had an issue. The included breakfast was nice, especially the cheeses. The location made it easy to walk to tourist spots or get around by trolley, with a stop right nearby.

It was quiet, though the tram tracks were noisy. The location is good: you can walk from the train station or take a tram. Check-in at reception is available until 17:00 pm, and there's also a self-check-in system. Our room was small but clean, with fresh linen and crisp blankets we liked. Breakfast was included and quite good. For Zurich, the price seemed reasonable for a couple of nights.

By morning I was exhausted and in pain, with an intensive two-day conference ahead. When I told the hotel about the night and my health issues, there was no apology or empathy. I arrived around 6 p.m. to find no one at reception. I rang a bell and reached a remote call center while standing outside on a busy street, trying to talk through a speakerphone. As someone with hearing impairment, I found that almost impossible. With nobody on site, I couldn't ask to change my pillow. I'm allergic to feathers, and the pillow provided had no support. I developed shoulder pain and had an asthma attack overnight. There was a card in the room saying guests could request other pillows, but that option is meaningless without staff present. The hotel may look modern, but it didn't feel accessible or responsive, and I don't think it's suitable for guests with disabilities or allergies. Very disappointing. I wouldn't stay at Sorell Hotel Rex again.

For a short visit, this worked well. The rooms were comfortable, breakfast was tasty and had plenty of variety, and the staff were friendly overall. The hotel was clean and well located for the tram and local attractions.
