Tianas Beach

We keep coming back for the quiet location, away from the crowds at the much pricier resorts. It’s basic, which is just what we like, and everything is clean and tidy. A light might not work, the gas stove can be fiddly to light, and the kayaks are a bit dented, but none of that puts us off. We’ve stayed four times in five years and hope there’ll be plenty more. We love our 2 star accommodation.

The location was second to none, but that was the one bright spot in our 10-night stay. The unit was fairly tidy, but the service let us down. We were told sheets and towels would be changed regularly; our sheets were never changed, even after I tried to contact the owner, which was a mission in itself. Her husband brought fresh towels on day four and said she’d come that evening to change the bedding, but she didn’t. We had just one hot shower on the whole trip. The shower is shared with neighbours and runs on solar. We were very disappointed. It felt like they took our money and then stopped communicating or providing service. Nice spot, but that’s where the positives end.

For the price, I would come back, though my wife wouldn’t. The beachfront setting is what makes the place, and it was less expensive than other options. The accommodation is clean, the bed was comfortable and it has what you need, but it’s definitely 2 star and quite worn out. The decking was in pretty poor shape. A couple of days’ work and some simple renovations could make a real difference.

Anna was so helpful and accommodating, and we loved finding a bowl of fresh local papaya and bananas. The views are amazing, with the beach just steps from the back patio. The appliances all worked well, and the windows let in a lovely sea breeze. It had everything we needed and felt comfortable and welcoming. We’d definitely stay here if we make it back to Rarotonga. It’s basic accommodation, not a resort, and I think some negative reviews may come from people expecting something different. One thing to plan for: arrange your own ride back to the airport. Anna organized transport for us, but the driver never arrived. Luckily, we managed to catch the bus at the last second.
