The room was spotless, the bed was comfortable, and the hotel stayed very quiet. It’s a small, welcoming place in a great spot, with a recently renovated building and lovely decor. The staff were kind and friendly, and seemed to know what I needed before I even asked. I’d happily recommend it.

Francisco and the team at Hotel Ocaranza went far beyond what I expected. We weren’t guests, just two people who came in from the street looking for help during the nationwide blackout on Feb 25, 2025. They brought us water, made us feel safe, and drove us back to the airport when no taxi would take us. Francisco, who I think may be the owner or manager, even waited in the parking lot to make sure we knew where to go. He was a lifesaver. We’d arrived in Santiago that morning and were staying at the airport before an early flight the next day. After lunch, we went into town for a few hours. The blackout happened while we were in a taxi, but we didn’t realize how serious it was as we walked around, ate outside in the 90-degree heat, and saw shops with their doors open. The dead traffic lights, backed-up intersections, closed Metro, and shops shutting early seemed odd, but we didn’t understand the scale of the problem until we tried to get back to the airport. There were hardly any taxis, and the drivers we found flatly refused the airport trip because what’s normally a 20-minute ride could take hours. With internet down, we couldn’t use Uber, Google, or Google Maps. Calls mostly went to voicemail or worked only sporadically, including our call to the airport hotel. After wandering around for a few hours trying to find a taxi or get through by phone, we decided to walk several miles to a chain hotel I knew, hoping they could help or perhaps give us a room. We wanted to get off the street before dark. Halfway there, tired and thirsty, we noticed the light on in this boutique hotel and people in the lobby. They saw we needed help and stepped in. We never stayed here, so I can’t comment on the rooms, though they looked nice. But they helped us when no one else did, including the police, restaurants, and passersby. That says a lot about the people here, and I suspect it’s a great hotel too. Our plans didn’t let us stay at Hotel Ocaranza, but I’d recommend giving it a try.

The location is really convenient, next to a small market and cafes, and close to metro stations and neighborhood sights like patio bellavista, cerro san cristobal, the zoo, and la chascona. Breakfast was simple, without a huge range, but filling enough and a good fit if you want to keep costs down and eat well. The hotel itself is modest, though the room feels like its little bit of luxury, with a very comfortable bed and bathroom. The staff were kind and helpful throughout. Gustavo and Francisca especially helped me from arrival through departure. I had a wonderful stay. Just keep in mind there’s no elevator, only stairs, so I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone with limited mobility.

The neighborhood is lively and convenient in the daytime, with plenty of places nearby and good transport options. At night it feels a little trickier, since there aren’t many people around. We spent three days here and had a very good stay. The room and facilities were lovely, and while we didn’t use the gym or pool, everything looked impeccable. Breakfast was delicious and had lots of options. They also let you use the dishes and some basic food items if you want to eat there, which is a nice touch. Whenever we asked the receptionists for suggestions, they were kind and came back with loads of ideas for things to do and places to visit. Special mention to Fran, who was a genius.

A cozy, really nice hotel, and the staff were attentive and friendly. That means a lot when you’re visiting from another country 🤭. My only suggestion is to add heating in the rooms. Everything else was great.
