WARNING: I stayed here one night in March 2019, and this review is long overdue. I believe the place is dangerous, a death trap that wouldn’t meet modern fire safety codes in any developed country. The whole building is wooden. There’s a courtyard with high walls topped with barbed wire (see pictures on Google Maps), and metal grates on every window that keep thieves out but also stop people getting out. The side doors are locked, and the main entrance has several doors, including a metal gate that needs a key and is locked at night. If a fire started overnight, I think everyone inside would perish. I got up early to catch a flight and couldn’t get out or reach staff to unlock the door. After waiting more than two hours, I missed the flight, which cost me about $1,500.

The building is impressive and full of character, with big, high-ceilinged rooms. It’s a former school a little outside central Santiago, about a 15 to 20 minute walk to the center. It could be amazing with some redecorating, but it hasn’t been done. At night, the hall has a nice spooky feel. The Wi-Fi was really poor, though the staff were friendly and breakfast was OK. Still a very good, cool place to stay.
The breakfast was plentiful and beautifully presented, and being near the metro made it easy to get around and see other places. Hostal Atte is welcoming and clean, with spacious rooms. The friendly, helpful staff made us feel right at home, and we highly recommend it. Hilda and María Jesús from Valdivia, Los Ríos Region, Chile.
We felt at home thanks to the wonderful service and all the care given to my family. The house has high ceilings, lovely decor, and was impeccably clean. An excellent place to stay, highly recommended, and we’ll definitely return on our next trip to Santiago. Thank you so much!
I’m giving it five stars because the house is so much more beautiful now than when I lived there in 1993. When I was about six or seven, a number of paranormal things happened there. They were terrifying, and I wasn’t the only one frightened. Looking it up and remembering the house, I’m happy to see how beautiful it is now. Best of luck.
