The rooms were nice, and the staff were helpful and friendly, including when they helped us book tickets. But the no-smoking rule doesn’t seem to be enforced. Our floor’s hallway often smelled strongly of cigarettes, and sometimes our room did too. Other hotels in China and elsewhere fine people for breaking the rule; here, smoking seems to be accepted unofficially. Breakfast ending at 10 also feels too early. Every day people arrived just before closing and rushed around collecting food, which made the atmosphere stressful for everyone on holiday.

The hotel is in a quieter area with a lovely canal walk and some great restaurants nearby. We enjoyed the canal view, slept very well, and were really happy with our four-night stay at the Kempinski while exploring Hangzhou. The location worked perfectly for us, and both breakfast and room service were great.

Mark, the manager, deserves a special mention for going out of his way with attraction recommendations and personal service throughout my stay. The hotel staff were fantastic. My junior suite was spacious, very clean, and on a high floor. The location was ideal too: a quieter neighborhood next to the Grand Canal mall, with plenty of food and drink options, shops, and a supermarket. A short walk along the grand canal was surprisingly peaceful. Definitely a five-star hotel, and I’d recommend it.

The room view was amazing, and the staff and service were great. The lobby coffee deserves a mention too, along with the nice snacks at the second cafe on the ground floor.

The food was excellent, and service throughout the hotel, including the event area, was outstanding. I stayed two nights for leisure, then another two for business, and both worked out really well. The team was helpful from my arrival at the airport until they dropped me back there. This beautiful hotel by the Grand Canal is one I’d happily return to in Hangzhou, and I recommend it for work or a getaway.
