Bohol Hotel - Hostel

For what you pay in a city where housing is among the most expensive, you'd expect more. The room wasn't clean enough, with bugs and other issues, and there were rats in the stairwell. The lift was shared with a food handling business. Expectations are limited here, but it still fell short.

The building itself felt dodgy, even though the area is well located and there are better options on a nearby street. The online photos were totally misleading. My room had no AC, no safe for valuables, and an open window large enough for a person to fit through. I felt safety was a zero. The staff were rude, defensive, and unprofessional. I booked four nights over Chinese New Year, but checked out straight away. I came away especially concerned for solo female travelers visiting Hong Kong for the first time. Please research carefully before booking. I wish I'd taken photos as a reminder to others.

After my flight was delayed, I called the manager and was assured he could accommodate our arrival after 1am. A booking-dot-com service also called an hour later and got the same assurance. But when my wife, our two kids, and I arrived, nobody answered. We buzzed, knocked, then pounded on the outside of the 24 lobby for 30 minutes. We went to the 6th floor, tried the other door and bell, then returned to the lobby and spent another half hour ringing and pounding before giving up and calling you and other hotels. The manager left my family and me in the street after saying we could stay. The hotel is dishonest and disreputable, and I would not stay there. The elevator was broken, something the manager hadn't mentioned, so we had to use the stairs between floors. During the hours we were stuck outside, my son was positioned for both drugs and sex. Given the time and the seedy place, that was almost understandable, but lying to us repeatedly was not a good business practice. This wasn't just inconvenient. It was dangerous.

Finding your way around is difficult on arrival because there are hardly any clear signs. The online pictures don't match the place, and there was no value for what I paid. It was dirty, smelled of garbage and rot, and seemed not to be cleaned. I found rats, bugs, and cockroaches. In my dorm there were three safes for six people, and one smelly bathroom and toilet shared by three dorms of six people each. The elevator had long queues, looked like it was going down to hell, and was often dangerously overloaded. By the entrance and inside the building, people offered counterfeit goods, drugs, and prostitution services. I was also charged a 65 HKD "SERVICE FEE" despite booking through Traveloka, where it said "Tax inclusive". There was no service: no drinking water, nobody cleaning the bathroom, and everything was dirty. I moved to another hostel that was cheaper and at least 50x better, with no extra charge, so I guess I was scammed. ALL OTHER HOSTELS outside Chungking Mansion are 50x better and WAY CHEAPER. This place cost 26 USD on the day I left. I found a hostel in the same area for 19 USD, with a huge improvement in quality of life, and my friend found a SINGLE ROOM accomodation on Hong Kong island for about 12 USD, and it was sunday. This place should be closed.
